Default Best Bang for the Buck - 1K in mods.

I have a 2005 GT Manual
It has about 85k miles on it and it's bone stock.

Given a price limit of $1000... what should be the first performance mods.

I'm more interested in power than handling.

My first thoughts (assuming I can get it all for 1K) are:
Cool air intake
Tuner
4:10 gears

Suggestions? Opinions?

That sounds about right and should be you first three Mods but you could also just put some NOS to it depends on what ya want to do.

Agree intake and tuner. Gears depends on what you want out of it.
Other options: a short throw shifter, lowering springs

I think the tuner is a great idea, you may want to try to open up the stangs lungs. I would suggest some sort of cold air induction and opening up the exhaust. In my opinion that would give you the best bang for the buck.

JLT II Intake + Xcal 3 for about $525, that is what i paid.
4.10s + master bearing install kit + oil + Install- $500 give or take, i paid $470 total because i did not need the bearing install kit b/c my car only had 30,000 miles on it at the time. Install was $300.. $150 for the gears, and then 20$ for oil/friction modifier i believe.

If you can spend another $300-500, i would go with Steeda UDP's and Steeda Delete Plates to go with it. Do it all at once and your car will be a complete different beast bro.

One of the tech advice letters printed in the July '09 issue of MM&FF was from the owner of an '06 Mustang GT who asked a similar question. Their advice? CAI, tuner, and steeper rear end gears. Certainly seems like the basic plan, and shouldn't be a surprise to anyone here on AFM.

I think that with 85,XXX miles you should also include a new fuel filter, spark plugs, and clean the throttle body pretty good with whatever you end up choosing.

4.10's are awefully steep! Not practical for a daily driver in my opinion. If you just plan on racing it, and gas mileage doesn't matter, then sure go with those. But if you are expecting to still cruise around town day-to-day I'd suggest 3.73's. Just my opinion.

I don't know man. I'm shopping for the exact same set up as recommended. I've done a bit of research the RPM difference isn't that big. It also depends on your stock gear. My situation is my average speed is 28mph(over 18k miles...really), I never drive in 5th gear. 4.10 should be great opposed to my 3.55. Also a lot of peoples 4.10 fears come from Fox body cars, the s197 has a bigger wheel, the 4.10 is supposed to be like a 3.73 in a smaller wheeled Fox body.
My plan is a Bama tuner/JTL intake with 4.10 installed. I already have a built rear suspension with a short shifter so I should be ready to commute back and forth to work at 28mph
That is my .02

If your car is not a DD, go 4.10s. I went with 3.73s on my DD and i wish i went for the 4.10s. I even have an AUTO so its even worse when it doesnt shift into 5th gear. Mileage is good when on cruise control on straight roads, but stop and go. City i see 13.4 driving easy.

Do NOT scrap the gears, the short shifter would be a great mod..

If i were him, i would get these all at once.

CAI + 93 Tune(if available in the area)
MGW Short Shifter
4.10 gears + master bearing install kit

Then save up money for Exhaust, even just axel backs to get it sounding mean!

This is confusing, is it good or bad? Whats your average speed? What was you MPG before the gears?

I don't think that leaves cash for the gear install?

HAHA, now that i read that- i mistyped it like a SOB. What i meant was as follows:

If your car is not a DD/ you are not worried about MPG's, then go 4.10s. I went with 3.73s for my DD and was hoping it was more of an increase in performance. Although in one sense i am happy i stuck with my 3.73s because my MPG's is in the toilet.

Avg speed, prob like 30s or so.. I usually drive 50-60mph everywhere i go, unless its highway- then i go faster..
My MPG before the gears in the cityh was 17.6-18.6 easy.. Now im hitting 13.4's all day long.

True that, i was aware that the list i provided was more then $1000. I meant to also say, save up a few more hundred to pull it all off at once. My shop installs gears for $250 if you buy parts through them or 300$ if you bring everything.

Short shifters are awesome, i do NOT know why every stick driver rolls around with the crappy stocker! It is the longest throw and it sucks.

Excellent feedback

I contacted a shop here in the Atlanta area and he said the install for the gears would be $600. I'm glad I posted this thread now. You guys have let me know that I should NOT have to pay that much.

About the 4:10... I've given this quite a bit of thought: I drive the interstates in Atlanta and, frankly, we fly! I average 80 going to work and I often pounce on it to send a message to some idiot that won't get out of the left lane. At 80 I'm tacking a tick below 2500rpm. On the down shift I hit a tick above 3500rpm and there's a slight delay before she starts to pull really hard at around 4100rpm.

The situation is similar when I'm running at about 60 in 4th. When I jump to 3rd to tear a WRX a new I want to be in the power band.

I get about 22mpg the way I drive. If I get 20 with the gears and dust off a few G35s, WRXs and M3s I'll be so happy.

I can get the parts from Brenspeed for about $820. If I can find a shop in the Atlanta area that will install the gears for a reasonable price I might just pull the trigger.

Glad we are helpful! This is why i am so addicted to these forums. Anyhow, yeah 600 for just install is highway robery. A few shops by me wanted to charge 400 for just install and i keep doing research and found my shop that does 250$. Usually i would be sketched out about it just because its so cheap, BUT i knew plenty of people with supercharged stangs that were installed and tuned there, my good friend josh had his 05 STI fully buillt and tuned there as well. Hell even other shops in the area had taken their shop cars to him..

With 4.10s, at 80mph your tach will show a good 3000rpm.. With 3.73s, i believe mine at 80mph is like 2700ish?? Don't quote me on that, i am trying to remember.

I can't speak for 4.10s, but my 3.73s highway mpg on cruise control can do a good 22mpg. Doesnt happen often because i drive 80mph usually.

I saw you pull the trigger sir =)! Good luck, keep us posted.
