I'll be driving my mustang through a Chicago winter this year, and I want to get some winter tires and steel rims so that I don't spin out on every turn, so I have a few questions.
I have a 2006 mustang V6 with the pony package, so what size wheel and tire will I have to order to fit my car?
What brand tire and wheel are good for the winter?
I am thinking about putting a couple hundred pounds of sand bags in my trunk so that I have more weight on the rear axle, will this help at all?
Thanks

many ppl have a winter set up. your best bet is to go on tirerack.com and search around. you can buy a cheap set of rims and a set tires as a package deal on there. bridgestone blizzaks and firestone winterforce are some good ones. i usually keep 100lbs sand in the trunk when there snow on the ground. The traction is outstanding. you just have to remember that your not invincible
I drove my 06 V6 last winter on a set of basic 16" rims from TireRack.com with Bridgestone Blizzak W60s. I think I actually had just as much control over the car as I did in my '04 Nissan Sentra. Of course, I wouldn't recommend driving your Mustang in a blizzard in the least. It is going to be more a function of your driving ability than your car if you have the correct tires for the conditions. I think you'll be fine with the Blizzaks.

On the drivers door jamb there is a factory sticker with tire, rim options and recommended tire pressures. As far as tires, Tirerack.com offers a wide range of tires. The wheels depend on your preferance. You might consider calling local "recycling yard" or custom wheel dealer for some "take offs". If your lucky you can find the same wheels you have so your look stays the same year round. I ride with 3 45lb sand tubes and blizzaks front and rear with my oe 17" wheels, I have a set of 18" Cobra R wheels I ride in the summer, and never had a problem in Iowa winters. As long as you ride like a "human"

Yes it will. The only winter tires I've used are the Firestone Winterforce. They are great in the snow and relatively inexpensive. A little squirrelly on dry pavement especially when new.
I currently use my Pirreli P-zero nero's which are the stock tire on my stock 17's and have very good traction is most conditions and i drive every single day, sleet, snow and rain. When these tires go i'll get some more "wintery" tires but for now they are great. Just stay in the right lane and brake early, steadily and slowly. Do everything 1/2 second slower and you'll be fine. I also keep weights from my dumbells in the trunk. About an extra 75lbs or so.

I put 3 60lb bags of tubesand in the trunk, Hankook Icebears on all 4 corners & had great traction & control during the winters I drove mine in OH & weatern PA.
I've got a GT, so care had to be used when pulling out from a stop.
I got Toyos and they are great. To get Blizzaks, you need 18" rims I think.
The Toyos ROCK!!!! We got nine feet of snow last year, in the month of December, alone. Had to shovel my freaking roof. I only missed two days of work, because I still had my Nitto race tires on.
In case no one told you... Nittos SUUUUUUUUUUUCK on snow. Especially when it gets over a foot.
Last winter I ran my '09 GT through the Michigan winter without a problem. Had 17" Michelin Ice X tires mounted on my stock wheels and put 150lbs sand in the truck (convenient tube rolls from my local hardware store). I was able to travel through snow and ice and some heavy storms without a problem. Just follow the advice of folks here and get some good winter tires and put some weight in the trunk and you should be able to handle most of what is out there.
This season I am in a '10 GT with 18" wheels. I plan on getting the 17" OEM Bullitt wheels and on putting my Michelin Ice Xs back on and don't anticipate any problems.
........ in a 225/60-17 size with some 17" painted black wheels, I don't like parking anything for the winter. If I couldn't have studs I'd run Nokian Hak R's
A bit skinnier a tire with a shallower offset to tuck them under the fenderwells, less spray/debris on the body.
