Question Is there a way to tell if fuel tank was tampered with?

Hi guys,

Straight from the introductions forum to here, this is my question.

Just yesterday, I found out that my '07 GT/CS's fuel cap was literally cut away and presumably stolen. I'm not aware that these things are a major item that need to be stolen or anything of the like, so I'm thinking that it was either some idiots trying to steal fuel (my car was already near empty so I don't think that helped them if that's what they were after), or these same idiots were trying to sabotage the car via the fuel tank.

The thing is, before I found out about that, I'd already driven it some (to get to the gas station where I was told about the missing cap) and I didn't feel any performance difference. Upon examination, I didn't see any residue of anything around the area, so I'm really hoping that it wasn't the case of someone trying to put some foreign material in there. Is there a way to tell for sure? Do I need to take it in for some sort of servicing to be able to tell? Since I needed to replace the fuel cap anyway, I've bought a lockable cap. I was looking at either a locking cap or locking fuel door, but I went with the cap for the time being. Useless move? Should I just get a locking fuel door as well?

Also, I've heard people recommend BP fuel (because of "BP Invigorate"). What do you guys think about that? Or does it really not matter? I've had people swear by that specific fuel for their cars, and if it helps, I'm all for it, considering also that their rates (in my area anyway) are decent. Thanks in advance guys =).

Tough to tell for sure but if you didn't see anything (like sugar) spilled around the fuel door they probably didn't do anything. I'd be sure to fill it up with good gasoline (Shell, Amoco, BP). I run nothing but Shell in my car.

Someone probably just needed the cap more than they thought you did.
