I plan on tinting the windows in the new ride (upset they don't have the factory tint like the Exporer etc). This is my first mustang WOOHOOO and I am worried about the back windows. I've seen a few tint jobs that just don't look right. The rear windows have that black film that I assume cannot be tinted over because I always see a break in the tint. This, in my opinion, looks horrible. I may have to tint them all and install some louvers(?) and that would be just fine with me!!
I guess I should ask a question, forgive my rambles . . .is this a problem or have I just seen shotty tint jobs?

I am new to Fords, but are you talking about that dot matrix crap?
Theres one way around that problem with the "spotted" section of the window, i have seen some installers that will wet-sand that section to reduce the thickness of the small black spots, this allows the film to cover the whole window.

Ahhh, so we are talking about the same stuff. You'll have to cut me some slack... I'm coming from the land of J-Bodies
I've never heard of anyone getting a satisfactory tint overtop of that stuff, so I don't think it has to do with the quality of the shop. Another solution, which I have heard of a few guy doing, is to tape it off and paint it with a flat black paint. I imagine you would want to use a couple of coats to make sure you block out any light, and maybe take it down a half inch or so past the dot matrix to give the tint place something they can overlap.
Please check around for more info on this before you try it though. For example, I have no idea what kind of paint to use for this. I would hate to see you mess up your ride!
I think that the painting it seems like the easiest, and most permanent way of dealing with it. The glue idea concerns me, because what happens if/when you ever want to get your tint re-done? Also, check out those replies that say the sanding method can cause rust

I'm getting my '05 GT windows tinted soon and the guy that's going to do it (and has been tinting autos for 16 years) said he's done two '05s already and there are no problems. He said some of the older Mustangs had the problem with "bumps" on the rear glass. I'll find out whether or not the blackened area on the rear glass in the '05 creates a work-around situation - maybe it's necessary to smooth it out or go around it?
My 98 Cobra has developed the same problem with the dots on the rear window. I am interested to see when I get the 05 GT tinted, if it will do the same thing...at this point I'm going to ask about some type of warranty coverage for that problem...
depending on how dark you go with the tint in the back window, you can always have the window tinted all the way up to the "dot matrix" stuff. then cut a piece of black vinyl sticker to cover the black matrix from the inside. if you use like 5% tint or so, you'll never notice the vinyl, it justs blends in with the tint!
