Have you picked up the new Car and Driver Mustang vs. GTO . ITS mustang vs. camaro all over !
GTO 13.3 @ 107 ,0-100=11.7 ,top speed=158. 400hp.
MUSTANG 13.8 @ 103 , 0-100=13.0 , top speed= 147 . 300hp.
The Mustang is alot better looking ,but looks aren`t going to help you win at the stop light.
You've got about a $10,000 baseline price difference to start with. That's an awfull lot of upgrade parts for the mustang. Sink the 10k into the stang and then compare the two.
The GTO may be faster, but with the way sales have been, its unlikely that you'll come across one at a traffic light.
I've seen maybe 3 GTOs on the road in the past 6 months. I saw 3 05s on the road in one day.
The Mustang will always be a hard car to beat in terms of sales. The Camaro and Firebird couldn't beat it and the GTO isn't fairing too well either.
they may not have beaten or beat it now at sales but from a performance standpoint (which is what i really care about) ford continues to lose the HP wars. look at it this way, its about 4-5 years AFTER the camaro/firebird died that ford gives us a car that has the hp of the past competition. those cars had 320hp options when they left us. but from a sales point yes your right, they cant touch ford.

It makes you wonder if Ford does that intentionally...
I mean, on one hand, you have an extraordinarly cheap V8 sports car for anyone who wants it. On the other hand, it's so cheap to begin with, and performance parts are so readily available, one can buy it and soup it up, and have a Camaro killer for less than a Camaro SS. If someone doesn't want to modify it, it's still a formidable muscle car.
The Mustangs have always been a very popular car.I feel that the reason for that is how responsive that they are to small mods and the huge aftermarket that has been created around them.On the other hand just when GM had started to get the Firebird and Camaro right they killed them. That LS1 engine has more potential in it than I have ever seen from any other car out there and is VERY responsive to mods.
The GTO is a fast car, but it's still just an Australian family car with a pony car motor in it. I've always heard that it was easy to sell a young mans car to an old man, but very hard to sell an old mans car to a young man.lol

.
That was, and still is, a marketing point. I can't recall if it was Bunkie Knudsen or John DeLoreon who came up with it.
I think sticking the GTO badge on that over grown Cavelier is a travesty. The thing isn't selling, hence all the incentives from GM. I gave it a serious look. I'd like to have more choices than color and transmission. And no convertable model is offered. And the GTO guys are whining because one of the mags rated the Stang better than the Goat.
You'll notice in Car & Driver that the GTO did better in the straight line testing, while the 'Stang did better in handling. Too bad they didn't do a comparison on a road track.
I seriously looked at the goats also and my pontiac dealer was eilling to let 04's go for the same price i eventually ordered my 05 GT for. roughly 28k the sticker on it was 34.5k and up here if you dont catch the car as its unloaded from the truck EVERY dealer ads 7$ cans of exterior, interior, and undercoatings to the cars and charges 1500$ for it!!! As for handleing the Monaro is a big time road racing car in the V8 supercar series in Autrailia, so its no slouch but I dont know exact specs.

The real reason Ford doesn't have 400hp in the GT is because.....
1) It cost more to make hp
2) It causes more warranties= Cost more to make the car
3) Insurance companies will rate it like a Cobra = more people won't afford it
4) Gas mileage will suffer, hurting Fords EPA requirements = Cost more to make the car
Ford never intended the Mustang GT to compete with Vettes and GTO, etc..., that is what the Cobra and in some respects the Mach1 were built for. They except the trade off of the points above to compete, but they are limited edition and owners except the extra costs, insurance, etc.
Making a 450hp Mustang GT would kill sales. That is why Ford keeps the costs down for you to afford to have a good foundation for building one yourself if you choose, with plenty for parts to do it. All at cheaper insurance rates.
Ford has done this by design, which is why Ford is kicking GM's ass on sales
The car magazines to the comparisons, because having rivals go at it sells magazines. Just look at the price differences between the two cars. GM loves it, because anytime you compare, they do well. Ford could care less. They should compare an 04 Cobra with the GTO
