Default Oil Change

Got a new '05 V6 for Christmas. It's been a long time since I owned a NEW car, let alone this fine looking machine. Does it still make sense to change the oil around the first thousand miles on a new engine? I want this baby to last a long long time.

I went to the new Mustang owners seminar at the dealership last night - they said 3K for first and subsequent changes if mainly stop-and-go city driving and every 5K if mainly highway driving.

I got mine changed at 1750 miles, was shooting for 1500. Have heard a few people say 1000 miles. Have heard a ford service technican say 1st change at 1000 miles on a new ford car. My professional opinon as an engineer is that changing it before 3000 miles won't hurt anything. I can't say for sure that it will help anything. Not changing it "could possibly" be harmful... ie new engine breaking in, metal shavings and increased heat in areas with high friction. Since my dealer gave me 12 free oil changes it was a no brainer for me.

Some people are changing the oil after only 750 miles.

I think this is overkill.

Mine has 1600 miles and still no oil change.

I'll do mine around 3000 miles. I dont think my engine is going to die

Default Free oil change at 3K?

A previous post indicated that Ford offers a free oil change at 3,000 miles? Are we talking the dealer or Ford reimbursing the dealer?

I can't imagine the dealer is very concerned with minor damage or wear on your new engine. As long as it doesn't cause them to make a repair while under warranty 36 months, they could care less about your car in the long run and will tell you anything. With synthetic oil 5000k is certainly an acceptable mileage. The question is if you should change the oil early the first time. Matter of opinon. But I won't drive my baby relying on assumptions of good enough.
