Default Automatic or Manual?

Who has an automatic '05 here? Which is better? Automatic or Manual? I also found this on the net and want your opinion..."Manual transmissions are more efficent than automatics. From an energy conservation stand point. However autos are getting better and the fact that a human controls the manual transmission and can drive in a way the ruins the efficeny advantage. Add in the CV's and auto shifting manuals, then I can't see any advantages of the manual anymore. But my opinion here is the one instance the manual is better, for impressing the chicks!"

Manuals are better for fuel milage!!! Thats why most europeans who pay 5 or 6 dollars a gallon of gas have never seen an auto!!! For performance it depends what you want, drag racers prefer auto's (you dont see any 7sec. manuals. at least I haven't) and if your like me and like to straighten out corners manual is better or some of the hi tech semi auto's me I prefer manual.

Automatics HAVE been getting better over the years; the fuel econonomy savings with manuals is becoming less and less, and is also determined by your driving style. As an aside, I lived in England in the late 80s and the attitude then regarding automatics was not that they had poor fuel economy, but that they were driven mostly by frail grandmothers and others who were incapable for whatever reason of driving a manual.

Default I Just Don't Like Torque Converters

Automatic transmissions use torque converters. Torque converters can decrease the amount of power you can put on the road, because of the slippage they permit. That's why autos get worse gas mileage than a (well-driven) stick.

The best of all worlds is, of course, a sequential manual transmission. This is an transmission with a clutch, not a torque converter, but the car shifts for you. The Audi DSG II is especially sweet, since it has two transmissions in one. One for the even gears, one for the odd gears, to reduce shift times.

Check How Stuff Works for a clearer explanantion.

BTW: First Post! w00t! And hello to all on AllFordMustangs.com!

Mine also…if it ever gets built. I've owned enough 4speed sticks in my lifetime and just want to get in and pop it into drive. I'm not out to set the world on fire w/ lightning fast shifts and 4 gear rubber anymore!

Must be Grandmothers and other uncapable automatic drivers at the 1320's.PRO/S,S/S...ect...but I get your point.

Autos are becoming a work of art now, and are the fastest at the track. but that's liek serious drag. if you want to feel the car have a good drive "impress the chicks"(they really don't give a ****) then go for the stick.

I drive an auto, I love the feel of my car it's still good. Im sure i get more respect if it was stick but whatever. Girls are more impressed with the name "mustang" rather than the engine or 5 spd. How many girls do you meet that come in and say what kind of engine is in there? Lol. I get more " Mustang is the coolest car ever I have a thing for mustangs" as goes for trans too. and real car fanatics dont usually care on the trans more on the engine.

SOme say manuals are safer because you can downshift in trouble. but Uh automatics do have all the gears in low so whatever they're the same lol.

But Im younge and verile, I plan on bying my next satng in 5 spd, and enjoying my car just a little bit more , it's preference

Actually, funny story about that. When I was stalking...er,..um,....I mean "conviently" running into my future wife (we both worked at the same company), I once "conviently" bumped into her while we were walking out to the parking garage. At the time I had a 1994 Mustang (it was 1996 at the time), we came up to my car and she said something like, "nice car,... tell me it's a stick". She later said she was worried right after she said that because she was afraid that she would have insulted my manhood if it was an auto. Lucky for her (and especially me), it was a 5 speed!! Honestly, I don't think it would have had an effect on us getting together, but she definately thinks more of a sports car with a manual than an auto. My good buddy has a Trans Am convertable...auto,....and my wife always asks him when he is going to get a man's car. It's especially wierd because my wife is a girly girl, nowhere near tomboyish.

To each their own, and I don't think I would ever buy a car because it would get chicks (even if I was single), but some women do notice these things.

Are you sure it wasn't when she bumped into you that she asked "tell me that's a stick!"

I've always driven stick shifts and I like how, just by resting your hand on the shifter knob, you can feel the "heartbeat" of your ride - the engine churnin' under the hood. Do that with an auto and - can't feel anything. Just too disconnected for my tastes, although if I lived in a traffic-packed city I'd prob consider an auto....

Cheers!!!

no you see it means nothing to them they just want to make sure we're happy about that crap. Like yeah they'll ask and they think oh he thinks he's awesome shifting blah blah. just makes us feel better, and that's why girls are great.

I feel disconected when I drive those cars with the in dash automatic shifter and you have nothing to grab on to
