Default Muscle or Pony?

Is the 2k5 Mustang GT considered a true muscle car or a pony? Actually what's the difference between the two anyway? My friend says Mustangs have technically never truly been muscle cars to begin with.

Your friend is correct. Mustangs have always been considered "Pony" cars. A true "Muscle" car will be considerably larger and typically seat 5 or 6 people without hassle. Most only have two doors, like the Mustang, but they also usually have bigger engines. In the late 60's, when the Muscle Car era was at it's heght of models, the Mustang came with big engines too, so it could compete. But still, it wasn't a Muscle car. Those were generally "intermediate" sized cars and the Mustang has never been bigger than "compact" as far as I can tell.

That may be correct, but I really don't know what the definition of a "muscle car" is.....I guess. AND.....I grew up during what is now know as the muscle car era. I got my license in 1968..........I used my mom's car (a 68 SS Impala) to take my driver's test. A few month's later, I owned a 66 GTO.

Back then, we didn't call them muscle cars..........anything that you couldn't out run was either a COP or a BADASS. (Some called the badasses called themselves "shorts".)

Pony or muscle..........it's still nice to have a ride that will at least pass another car when needed, huh?

that is a great point..........true muscle car's in my opinion are car's that come from the factory with motors built for racing. If you look back in the late 60's and early 70's, you had shelby's, boss 302 and 429's, etc.........those were muscle car's......the term pony car came from the fact that ford had put a horse on it's car, to signify that the car was wild and different.........but in today's society, it is hard to say what is and what isn't a muscle car or a pony car........is the 03/04 cobra a pony or a musclecar? Is the 2000 cobra R a pony or a muscle car? Most people tend to concider a v8 car a muscle car anymore, even though alot of the v8 motor's are just v8 motors there is nothing special about em.........just my .02 worth of rambling

I have to disagree,a Muscle Car came in all shapes and sizes, from the little monster 427 Cobra,"Muscle Car"(and 289)to the hudge body "Muscle Car"70 429SC Torino.....no way could I get 5 people in that big car with no hassles ...........The pony name came from the horse emblem it carries.

and the new 05 Mustang is every bit of a"Muscle Car"...(The Legend lives on)...as the ones before it.

I will agree with you though...that Muscle Cars are factory built units built for street and strip.

IMO Ford is dedicated to keep the "Muscle Car" traditon alive with the Mustang.

just my msrp's worth
