Default Cat-back vs. Axle Back

I'm looking to change my exhaust. Since the '05 already has a 2.5" pipe from the cats...is spending the extra money for the catback exhaust system a waste of money? Am I losing any HP gains or sound quality by just going with the axleback options?
Thanks!

The pipes going over the axles on the cat back are probably mandrel bent, so they will flow a lot better than the crush bent stockers. It might be worth 2hp up top now, but if you go for a blower at some point, that's where it'll really help.

I've read several times that the stock pipes are mandrel bent. I have seen some pictures were the aftermarket cat backs seemed to be straighter and have less radical curves, which should be slightly better. I'm holding off on doing anything to my engine until mods have been proven and I get an xcalibrator.

The stock pipes ARE mandrel bent so there is not a real benefit to spend the extra $$ to change out the entire cat back system. If you notice that is why most of the companies make axle back systems now instead of the cat backs for the older mustangs!..Just get an axle back system

The Stock exhaust is 2.5 inch mandrel bent from the headers back. There is a single Cat on each side. It is mandrel bent all the way to the muffler. The only bad thing is the H pipe, I would get that changed to an X pipe. I just replaced my stock mufflers with Flowmaster 40 series and it sounds Deep and Loud. Not as loud as turbines, but a sound you notice.

I ordered the Magnaflow with Magnapaks catback today...the price difference between the axlebacks and the cat was minimal. Got a quick response from Magnaflow today...the Tru-X pipe from them is still in development but will supposedly be coming out soon. I will be going with that when it comes out.

I've pretty much narrowed down my choices to the Magnapacks and the JBA's. Can you try and post some sound clips when you get them installed?

Sure will but it might be awhile...I received the magnaflows on 2-7. I won't be putting the magnaflows w/ magnapacks on until they come out with their Tru-X pipe. It is supposed to be out "soon" but you never know how long that will be! I want to install the x pipe and cat back system all at once. Once that is done I will repost it.

4511.21.......You may have a link to the 05 tru- x with thru cats already but if not heres the only one I've seen...it still says coming soon but at least it's listed...It isn't listed for an 05 on magnaflows sight that I've seen.
I keep checking this site for updates.

Thanks for the link...just placed it in my "favorites" and I will check it time to time.
I wish I had known you had a source for the catback system for $436 before I ordered mine I just forgot about your earlier post. I paid $540 shipped. Seems like every where I went it was the same price...only had a one cent difference for the retailers.

Will this source have a good deal on the x-pipe too...if so I will send you a PM to get the info.

No prob...
The link is a different site...but still a good reference tool.
The site I got my set from still isn't showing the x pipe...they only have 04 down...and as for price the cat X for the 04 is 449 ......I don't know if they will offer a coupon deal yet.......See....The regular price on the catback system was 536....but a coupon code makes it 436 delivered for account holders...but that was only for the magnaflow catback #15881....They may not offer a deal on the X....We'll have to see when they put it up.
I'll send you the info on them.

Wow...So many....

Yes the tru X cats bolt up to the headers or stock manifold..........no tune needed yet that I am aware of......too little back pressure would be the only issue, but I doubt it.
Not sure ..exactly what headers...but they would need to be the same length as stock.
http://www.alternativeauto.com/prods...tang_tune.html
This link is to a company that sells the Xcalibrator...the price is not great ..but the info in the read is...as far as they say.....you should tune for every mod..cabon trap...air intake..and I'm going to assume headers...but I know of several people that have done both and no tune.
My advise is ...if you plan on going as far as headers than buying a tuner of some kind as part of the package is a good idea
