Default The Big Question

I am a HUGE car enthusiast(motor oil in the blood does not do me justice). Ever since I saw the new mustang, I have been DROOLING over my keyboard and the 16 different magazines that i bought with reviews on it. I now have the opportunity to buy a car. The only problem is that this will be my FIRST CAR as i am only 16. Now before you go on and say, "ohh no this is too much car for you", let me explain my situation. I live in a Suburb and am an only child. My parents have basically said to me, "Pick out a car". As of now, I have NO speeding tickets, have taked h-way saftey, over 6 hrs of behind the wheel driving with an instructor, and atleast 100 hrs of driving down(i drive in my free time+ i have till september to make my decision).I have also will be taking the BMW defensive driving school in SC this summer(plus maybe the M3 course if Im lucky). The car I am currently driving is my mother's 03 BMW 540(auto). The bimmer is no slow car. I am quite used to the extremely light peddle and the miracle of over 290hp in the rear wheels of a fast car. Now to the question. I have been looking at the Infiniti G35 coupe, the bmw 330ci coupe, and the mustang GT. The GT is by far my favorite. I understand that this is a Mustang forum but please answer my question honestly.( If you were wondering how i am to choose my car from the likes of these, let me just say that i have been working very hard for a very long time(to a 16 yr old) and happen to know a little something about the stock market+great parents who are really helpful) Thanks alot and i appreciate your oppinions.

At 17, I can't imagine there'd be much difference in the insurance costs, especially since the Mustang is less money than the others. With that in mind and taking in to account your seemingly rational approach (and the hard work leading up to this point) I definately vote for getting what makes you DROOL. Welcome aboard. We'll be waiting for the pictures. I'm 55 and what I drive rates pretty high on my grin-o-meter.

Reminds me of me when I was a yungsta .....Saved my money up from workin my butt off to get my 69 stang...before I could even drive .......I'd have to say go with the GT.

Heres why"
It's retro & destinctive in looks(not the everyday jellybean look).
Though some would argue,I think its the best Mustang platform since the late 60s & 70s IMO.
Just sitting in it and driving it gets my blood going.
Its an just awsume feel.
Ive waited years for the "Muscle Car" to actually re-turn.
and the GT does it for me.

Have you test drove you selections yet?

only the Infiniti. BC they let me test drive it BEFORE i get my licence(STRANGE). Its a nice car. The seats are great and the powers there... but theres just something lacking... oh ya.. a hearty V8. I guess im not a real fan of the all v6s on steroids these days(lotto power but NO BALLS to really use it!).I will say though, it is a very nice car.

The Mustang is a true automotive and american icon, the other cars aren't. 'Nuff said. Does the Mustang have the refinement of the other two? No, but I say F to refinement. The Mustang has a soul and character that other cars want (i.e. the new "GTO"). The other cars are for 30-somethings who think they have "arrived", whereas the Mustang is for any generation or "status". Plus the Mustang is easier less expensive to make your own, thru modifications. Buy the Mustang and welcome to the club. :thumbsup

dude, you already know which one you want to buy. Don't look to anyone else for justification.... you know what answer you'll get on this message board, and you know what answer you'll get on the infiniti and bmw message boards. Enjoy your choice. If it sucks you can always trade it off on something else.

good point. and yes i do know what i want. BUT i never needed any justification. im just trying to gather proof to show my mom(with a cynical accent) that im not the only one who thinks they can handle the car.

I am 34, and I am on my 10th mustang right now, an 05 GT. In September of 2004, I thought I would try to grow up and purchase a nice luxury car. At this time, I was driving a 2003 Cobra Convertible, which I still have. Anyway, my husband bought me a Mercedes-Benz..........it was a really nice car, it did some really neat things, but....when I stepped on the gas, it did not move like my Cobra. Two totally different cars, for two totally different types of people.

Well, the bottom line is I went to a FORD dealer, test drove the new GT, and well.....I'm sure you can figure the rest out. My husband was quite mad at me for trading it in, It didn't even have the license plates yet!!! Not to mention...I did not make money on the deal.....obviously! But, I am happy now, I love mustangs, I love the power, and in-case my husband reads this, I love him too!!! He isn't mad at me anymore.....at least I don't think so! Buy what makes YOU happy, not anyone else.

The GT does have a lot of power, but you can get hurt in any car, it is all about how you drive it. Just be careful....you would hate to have such a beautiful car and no license to drive it. Good Luck.

One more thing, we have twin daughters who will be driving in 2007, they are already picking out colors for their new Cobras.

right on. the infiniti has nearly the same power as a gt, but much less torque, but is probably much lighter so acceleration is likely similar. The BMW you specified is no slouch either, but it doesn't stand out in a crowd (imho). If I had the $$ I'd take the infiniti... but it has about an inch less headroom, so it would be pretty tight.

My own second choice was a Honda Accord V6 coupe. very nice drive and comfortable. 250hp from a 3.0litre. Ford definitely has to do something to get more than 210hp out of 4.0 liter v6. That's almost embarassing. Then again, the honda v6 costs more than a gt. trade-offs... trade-offs... trade offs

...I'm still waiting for my torch red GT to arrive... end of April if I'm lucky.

I just recently bought my first Mustang (GT 5 spd, IUP, etc) at age 47. I too considered the BMW & the Infiniti (money was not an issue). Both are great cars, but you will save 10K on the G35 and 20K on the 330ci. Keep the difference and invest it! I traded in a very clean '91 RX7 Convertable 5 spd man (I bought it new) on the new GT. It was a fun car! But I wanted a little more power (ok a lot more power! lol) and the new GT with it's retro looks just said something to me. The wife wanted it too! lol

My first car was a '71 Camaro Sport, then had a couple of cars my dad wanted me to have while in college. After college I bought a '80 Turbo Capri, then a '81 280ZX, then a '85 300ZX Turbo......and on and on....I now have a daily driver '02 Dodge RAM 1500 Quad Cab Sport. I love toys and have had some fun ones, so bottom line here is pick what you want to have the most fun with! You will not just have one car in your life, but start out by having something that stirs your heart! Take care of it and one day it may too be a classic likes it's '60's brothers are today.

Since you sound a lot like me at your age, just enjoy it! And remember that your head and foot control what you do with the car! You can have other cars later, but the Mustang has a soul the others do not.

Good luck!

PZERO,

As for the BMW and Infiniti, those are good cars. Dependable, well made and great in the performance arena. But they are like every other BMW and Infiniti.

The 05 Mustang is like a blank canvas. You buy the car, optioned out the way you want it and then the fun begins. The Mustang was made to be personalized. You accessorize it the way you want, making it one of a kind. You make it into the car you want. The aftermarket for this car will be incrediable. That is what will set the Mustang apart from the cookie cutter BMWs and Infinitis.

if money is NOT the issue and you really want the GT ... go ahead and get a pre-modded Saleen or roush mustang. Then you'll get all the perks of teh GT, plus the performance increase and customized looks of a roush/saleen:
