Default Consumer review, Ford Racing 4.10's installed

OK, I know lately there have been a few "4.10 threads" but, none gave me enough detail of what it entailed so I did my own.

Firstly, I had to shell out $650.00 for total package. I tried to get it for $250 labour like I've seen in some posts on gears but, no shop works that cheap around my area. I did get it reduced by quoting FR Website as $230.00 for 4.10's.
http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...rtKeyField=255

P/N for 8.8 rearend is M-4209-G410

FR gears are very highly rated and most importantly, they are known to be QUIETEST and one of the strongest.

Dropped car off at 8a.m. and picked up at 3p.m.
Old 3.55's ring and pinion were hot tanked, dryed, boxed and bagged. These guys took care of my Pony with great attention.

Was told and signed warranty to the effect of;
15 miles/ 15 minutes rest (baby the power)
15 miles/ 15 minutes rest (cold work the gears)
500 miles of "no harsh treatment"
change fluids
back to business as usual

That said, I told him I was going to get a feel for them and he winked.

Basically, it is now like driving on empty with a full tank of gas, cold morning power at evening heated temps, car "feels" 400 pounds lighter, all gears pull with no bog. Exhaust seems to not have low rpm resonance as much (under 2000rpm with load).
Before, my fav gear was 2nd, it pulled hard and wound out long, now 1-4 pull the same. I have NOT done a R3dF!r3 launch yet nor will I for another 450miles.

No more than normal noises are comming out of the car.

Retune. I filled up with gas, towel wiped paint (no scratches, yay) and reflashed Predator;
Plug in and key "on"
Custom tune
Modify tune
Axle
4.09
Install
Unplug
Drive away
Modify sig

Speedo is good again, lol I was doing "80mph" before retune and getting passed by cars, lmao.

Freeway test; 2500 rpm's gave 70 MPH dead on (used to be 2250 rpm @ 70 MPH). I had calculated 2600rpm's to my surprise it was less.

I am very happy so far and won't get full benefit until I re-lube. I know, I know, "wow man, my shop sez just go straight to track, etc".
I'm in no hurry and they are not going anywhere.

Bonus link for gear heads;

Peace

Hey R3,
Sounds great! What kind of shop did the install and did they supply the gears? Does this have any effect on the O/D option or is that only on auto's? I'm still undecided on a gear choice. I'll be on the highway for 80-100 mile runs to the hockey games. Not sure which way to go. THANKS! Oh ya, what's next???

The shop was a "Ring and Pinion ONLY" shop, heh. Hard to go wrong there.
I have a stick but, I don't think it will affect anything on the auto reg O/D.
You have a Predator, you will use the selected "auto" trans mode if not already dialed in.
As I said, I only "lost" 250 rpm at 70 MPH, hardly an issue with me considering the new snap I have.
For you, you may want the 3.73's with the different gearing you have in tranny and the smaller RWHP, it may be a better match but, I don't have auto so I am only guessing.
Next? I am undergoing appearance mods that will be a subtle change and will post pix in gallery in a few weeks. I'm sure to get mixed reviews.

Dear R3dF1r3,

Great description of your gear change...

I'm glad to hear that you like them and would value additional feedback after your 500 miles breakin period...

I, like others run an automatic so I was told by the Ford dealer that will eventually install a Saleen Supercharger that for the automatic tranny, the 3.73 is the best choice (considering that I will SC the ride)...

Thanks again,

Dave

thanks to both above. I have two shop's to call now and get some install prices. I remember a post long ago that said you had to buy some sort of kit to go along w/ the ring and pinion install on the '05. Anyone remember this.
I saw 7 vert 6's just driving my kid to the mall. All those tourists hitting the cape.

Glad to read about another satisfied "4.10 install" owner! The shop that installed my 4.10s do a ton of gears too. They use Ford Racing gear sets only and I'm really impressed with how quiet they are. I paid $275 for the install labor and felt like it was worth it to get the work done by an experienced shop. Performance improvement? Oh yeah - pulls really well through all the gears. A great mod!

irt to discofan; glad if I helped you. It takes alot for me to comment on any aftermarket wheels but yours are sick. Chrome Bullits with Cobra centers, you did very well. Brand? They look like 17" s. Don't worry I won't copy you cuz I lub my metallic grey Bullits. I plan to "mod" them a bit, heh. Red interior with silver paint, sweet. Now go and tint your windows (from a real good shop), you won't regret it.

irt sonny1213; I recall that old post, lots of guy talking about backlash and extra "bits" to ensure you have. I prefer to go to an exclusive rear end shop and let them worry about all that stuff. The only "extra" they called me on was new axle seals @ $6.50 each. I said "do it".

irt tksuther; I like your sig mods, pls get your gallery going. I want to see your ride.

Dear R3dF1r3,

Thanks you the good words on my wheels...

I bought them from CrossRoadzdirect.com... Matt, who owns the place is a true "stranger" and has several deep dish styles to choose from...

The Bullits come in Black, Chrome and Grey which would match your ride perfectly...

I mounted Falken GR451 255/45/18's but may need more shoe if I pimp my power...

I originally order my 05 GT is the same color as you have but problems getting the "my color" made me cancel the order and searched using the internet form a dealer in my area that could deliver...

Found mine in February 2005 and have been married to it ever since...

Next week, I go for gears and maybe lowering...

Already have the Predator w/ Steeda CAI...

Thinking about an SC but still gathering more info about it...

Had tinted windows on a previous ride. Tint looked fantastic but in Chicago, the "fuzz" hates tint because there is so much crime around town..

I'll stay in touch, Dave

Yeah, sweet close up. That's a nice setup. How do the Falken tires corner, nice g-rating? They look more low profile than the stock Pirellis.

I am guessing the low sidewalls make for "squirelly" launches or do they hook decent at hard launches?

Regardless, they look awsum.

I was thinking Nitto NT-555 Extreme ZR in the fronts, with a NT-555R Extreme Drag Radials in the back. Prolly not a good "rain" combo, lol but not sure about tires yet though as I really haven't got serious on 'em cuz I still got Pirelli's to burn thru.

Ok, so I went to Ford dealer yesterday and got the recommended 500 mile rear end lube change.

I can say that the 4.10's are like matching the Pony's engine with a more natural rear end gear. The response is so much smoother. And with FR parts, I have zero noise.

On dry roads I can spin tires in 2nd gear shift from 1st, chirp in 2nd to 3rd shift, and am still working on a consistent 4th gear chirp. 5th gear will prolly take a S/C to do. I haven't tried a 1st gear standing burnout, prolly won't, it is too easy now.

All said, for naturally aspirated engine, I can't complain at all.

Hey all,
The shop that did my gear change said you DON'T have to change the fluid (synthetic) at 500, more like 30k and no roll backs! Otherwise go and drive the car like usual. I have a slight noise on decel. and will wait and see for about 500 miles. If noise is bothersome or gets worse. They will add shims. It actually is now less after 100 miles. I tossed the old gears.

Hey R3d,
I called Ford tech # and talked w/ them today and some add the regular gear oil for 500 and then change out to synthetic or just run syn from the start. It is wise to mama the gears for 500 miles or if your into racing, go to the track and dump it at 6k! My noise is almost gone after 120 miles or so. I did not baby nor beat them on the way home. I had to stop and plug in the predator again. I found out that you put in the axle ratio (4.09) then download the 93 tune. I was +20 on the speedo. It may take me a month to hit 500 miles w/ fishing trips coming up. Good luck R3!!

Dear R3dF1R3,

My Falkens are sticky as "heck"...

They grab the road like a 500LB Gorilla grabs a banana!!! (Ha-Ha)

Don't worry about the 18" Chrome Bullits because if you really like them -- then buy them...

I may try tinting the windows but got to be careful of the heat (fuzz) in Chicago...

Got my CDC Spoiler and mirrors painted this week...

WOW!!! They did a terrific job...

I'll take pictures this weekend, if it doesn't rain...

My 3.73s are as quiet as a sleeping baby... No Noise at all...

Paid $375.00 for the install plus the gear set at $179.95... (Oh Well)

Stay in touch, Dave

Wow, I have a little noise and my kid like's it so far. If they sing too loud after 500 … then the gears will be replaced or shimmed. When pefect gear installs happen all the time…I'll be impressed, 05's , hmmm.
