Default Lap Top Tuning ?

I wanted to know if you can use a laptop computer to tune your car or do you need the x-cal? If so what type of wires do you buy ? where do you get the tunes? and around how much for the wires and the tunes ? http://forums.bradbarnett.net/style_...ault/dunno.gif

I think you need the x-cal to communictae with your car, it reads the data log from the car and also puts in the changes (no matter they were changed in the x-cal, or more involved in a laptop with the full programming capabilities.)

If you're doing a custom/professional tune, at your shop or on your own computer you still need the x-cal, plus the software in your computer/laptop to do it.

my mighty computer guru brother hooked up his lap top to my GT last weekend. He plugged it into the OBDII Port, then to his lap top, started the program, and I could see engine temp, oil temp, water temp, air temp going into the engine, my MAF sensor, or air/ fuel ratio, but we had had one too many martinis to really do anything else. I know the program he has works with both of his Nissan's, and it works on his Z06 Vette, and on my GT. We also ran through a list of operations on the car. ( I'm trying to re-activate my global windows feature ). I'll prolly head back up there soon, to see just what , or if I can tweak the timming, or any other good stuff with his program. Tim

The OBD II scanners are able to read diagnostic information from the car's computer and display it on a laptop (I have one myself), and these are great for doing troubleshooting, such as when the "check engine" light comes on. They provide details like temperature, RPM, stored trouble codes, etc. What they don't do is access the car's computer where the tuning parameters are stored. Companies like diablo and xcal reverse engineer this information and then provide a way to modify it. When you buy one of these units, you're not paying for the little electronic box (they are built oversea's and are relatively cheap) but for the knowledge stored in it. That's why you can't used the tuner on more than 1 car (you have to pay the "royalty" for each one). If a company made a PC version, it wouldn't be long before it was all over the internet and everyone was downloading it for free.

You really need to purchase the SCT XCAL2 if you intend to do any serious tuning. With it you are able to datalog your car using a USB from the XCAL to your laptop and you log any or all of close to 100 parameters and view them on your computer. The software is a free download from SCT after you purchase the XCAL.
