Just wanted to post my experience with getting an iPod into my car. If you have any questions/comments/ideas post them and I'll respond.
-------------------------------
What I used:
1- P.I.E. FRD04-AUX (PIE Aux Adaptor) $89.00 from
www.logjamelectronics.com
2- albireo's "Idiot's Guide to the FRD04-AUX Adaptor" by Joe Eiers (Extremly Helpful)
3- Griffin BlueTrip ($75.00 off eBay or $150.00 retail)
4- Vector Maxx SST 225W Power Inverter ($50 from BestBuy) There are probably cheaper ones out there; I went with this one. You need one that puts out 110v to power the Griffin BlueTrip.
-------------------------------
So total I spent $225.00 to do this, but IMO this is well worth it and the best solution. I wanted a wireless way of using my iPod in my car with keeping the factory stereo. I also did this all myself (newbie at this stuff) and took me about 1hr, although most of the time was because it carried over to night time, and it was VERY hard to see, you can probably accomplish this in about 30minutes to 1hour.
-------------------------------
Steps I took.
First things first- I removed power from the cars battery--then I removed the center console. This made it very easy to do this.
I then used albireo's "Idiot's Guide to the FRD04-AUX Adaptor", follow the instuctions...very very easy to follow and ultimately invaluable to this process. There is one step that suggests sodering wires together, you don't have to. I used these SNAP-WireTaps from Radioshack. The Radio Shack catalog number is: 64-3053 for the 18-22 gauge Wire Tap-In Squeeze Connectors (7-pack) and 64-3052 for the 18-14 gauge (10-pack). The are blue in color and are a little bit of a pain to get to close right, but I think it's the best alternative to soldering wires and the like. I went through a whole 10-pack trying to get it done. (could also have been I was doing this step while it was dark out.) I put my adapter at the bottom on the "floor" to the far right and plugged in the Red/White cables to the ports and ran that wire right out underneath the glove box. 2 things that were a pain... number 1 getting the radio back into place...number 2 getting the cigarette lighter above the radio back plugged in without disconnecting the tap ins accidentally.
This is where I tested the PIE adapter to make sure it worked. I reconnected car to battery. After I confirmed it worked...I disconnected power again...I closed everything back up except the center console and the side wings.
I placed the PowerInverter in the center console. I placed the "Red Block" to up against the right side of the indisde of the console. I ran the cigarrette part through the little black door in the compartment under the armrest thing that opens up. I pluged it into that lighter port. And closed up the door as best as I could. You will also need to leave the power switch in the ON position, as you won't have access to the power on/off switch on the inverter.
I then plugged in the BlueTrip and ran the wire down and to the right of the center console. You gotta push the wire through the side of plastics and it will come out towards the bottom near the passenger seat.
I mounted the BlueTrip underneath the Passenger seat, and ran the Red/White cables under the carpet along the wall of the center console. All wires will be hidden.
Now that everything is connected I reconnected the power and tested everything. Once I confirmed everything was working I went to close up the center console. This is a little tricky. I had to get the powerinverter to stay up on its side so it could be held inplace by the longer cupholder.
Once I got that closed up I was all done. Oh yea...reconnect the car to the battery and you'll have a bluetooth way of listening to your iPod.
Please note though that the BlueTrip only works with certain iPods (clickwheel, mini, photo) this does not work with iPod Video or Nano. Ans the transmitter connects to the top of the iPod and you have to have the headphone jack and that other rectangular port at the top. It does not connect through the dock. There are some other bluetooth adapters that you could use in a similar fashion to what I did. The bluetrip looked the best and cleanest on the iPod itself.
My only gripe with this is that I have to remember to unplug the Inverter from the cigarette lighter port when I turn my car off or else it keeps running.
But now I'm using my iPod in my 05
stang with the shaker 500 without any nasty wires showing. The ultimate clean installation, in my own opinion.
I don't know if the places I put the pieces to this puzzle are the best or most effective. I'm going to try and finiggle them around maybe to see if there are better locations. Especially the inverter so I have easier access to the power on off switch...if you have any comments or questions or ideas, please post them. I'll keep this updated.
