I feel ya there my friend, I learned to drive on a '81 Citation and I wrecked my mother's '83 Chevette two weeks after getting my license.
LOL - you have to work really hard to wreck a Chevette. I can't remember who the comedian was who said it but it something along the lines of wanting to commit suicide by driving his car off a cliff but it was a Chevette and it either broke down before the cliff or he couldn't get enough speed in it.
Those that have driven them know what we're talking about. I had a friend in HS that had a blue Chevette that would kick the @ss of mine all day simply because it had a manual tranny. Those were some pathetic races. Bystanders would actually think the race was being played in slo-mo for dramatic effect.

Remember those cars you wouldn't be caught dead in when you were young? Most of them have turned cool with age and rarity. I was reminded of this when I pulled in to work this morning and there was a Maverick parked in the lot. It's red with chrome wheels and it's looking pretty cool. This weekend at the show there was a restored '59 Rambler four door and a "67 Ambassador station wagon - try to get parts for those babies. There was also an AMX - not a dork car but rare and too cool. What cars do you remember?
My first car was a brand new 1971 Gremlin: not the "x" with the cool striping and the little V8 and mag wheels. Mine was the brown one with the radio option(I think I had to pay $16 for that): that was it. Actually, I really liked the car, mostly I think, even though it was the ugliest joke on the road, it was MINE. There is an interesting situation that went along with this that shed some light on a question that I had always wandered about. How much markup is there on a new vehicle from the factory? At the time I bought the vehicle, AMC was offering a rebate of 10% of the manufacturer's price. The car listed at $2100.00 and I was expecting a $210 check to be coming in the mail. Well, I was a little pissed when I received a check from AMC for 70 bucks! When I called the dealer to give him hell he reminded me that it was 10% of the manufacurer's price. Apparently, at that time, it cost the dealership $700 and he marked it up @200% to arrive at the $2100 I paid. Interesting, no?

A little off topic, but most cars have between $1200-$3000 between the invoice and the MSRP. Some vehicles like trucks have closer to around $4000-$7000 between invoice and MSRP. Luxury cars have close to what trucks have, but in many cases, like Mercedes, the price is not really negotiable (a little, but not much).
First car bought was in 1979 @ 16 yrs. , was a lime green 71 challenger 340 ($1200 I think ) which I blew a rod & my Dad sold for $500 after I went to college 1981 ...first, a 77 cutlass 350 V8 ..pretty nice set of wheels for $2500 then a 1979 dodge omni 024 (cause big cars weren't cool by then) which I pimped out ...then some weird isuzu ..impulse I think...had like a thousand buttons on the dash...my brother @ the time had a POS Rabbit & then a chevette ...in between I had a behemouth 1954 Chysler Hemi (331) New Yorker 4 dr sedan ...$600 toy ! after that.... all muscle ....Until I had kids.
When I worked at a Cevy dealer as a line mech and the Chevettes came out they had an ad slogin that went like this...Chevy Chevettes will drive you happy!.as a mech. that had to work on them we used to sing.Chevy shovits will drive you wacky!
My first was a hand me down '97 Ranger. Wasn't bad for a first auto though. Manual, 4 cylinder (if you floored it, it'd get up to 30mph, maybe), a/c, standard across the board, even a radio w/ no cd and no tape deck .
You must be a young-un
I still drive my 97 Ranger stepside nearly everyday. Love that truck! Of course, love my stang too! One of my early cars was a 71 Maverick Grabber in bright grabber (lime) green. Of course, that was close on the heels of the 60's so . . .

Yeah, I'm 24. I have a good job and make really good money for my age w/ no college degree ($31k). Probably going to go back to become a CPA, since they can do almost anything and make great money.
My first car was a hand-me-down 74 Mercury Montego 4dr. I call it my BCC (birth-control car) because there was no way I could pick up chicks in that car.....
1971 Pontiac Lemans T-37. 350cuin.2bbl carb no a/c. Jenson co axles in the back. Black vinyl seats, the ugliest cream color you ever saw. Called it herby the love bug. Go Figure
1968 White Ford Ranchero thought it was the coolest thing out there with the spare tire tucked in a cubby hole behind the bench seat. If it got any more manual options I would have had to Flintstone it.
