Remember those cars you wouldn't be caught dead in when you were young? Most of them have turned cool with age and rarity. I was reminded of this when I pulled in to work this morning and there was a Maverick parked in the lot. It's red with chrome wheels and it's looking pretty cool. This weekend at the show there was a restored '59 Rambler four door and a "67 Ambassador station wagon - try to get parts for those babies. There was also an AMX - not a dork car but rare and too cool. What cars do you remember?
Ahhhhhh! '59 Rambler!!
Before I clicked in here - just going by the Subject - I immediately thought of the '59 Rambler my dad bought in 1970 when we first moved to Las Vegas. Still had it four years later when I started driving... by then the carburetor was shot, so he taught me how to 'prime' the engine to get 'er started.
Is there ANYTHING classier, cooler and sexier than a girl taking her friends out for a cruise to the then-newly-opened MGM Grand Hotel and - before leaving the parking lot - having to pop the hood and trunk, grab the gas can, pour some into the engine and then get inside and smash the pedal down repeatedly while trying to get the THING to turn over??
It did have that really cool push-button transmission, however! And seats so ratty that springs came up through the beach towels we had to lay over them!
Thankfully, my grandmother (yes GRANDMOTHER - she was about 64 at the time... now ya'll know why - at 47 - I was not the least bit hesitant in buying my first Mustang ) blew the engine on her VERY cool '67 Camaro RS 327 while taking the Baker Grade (I-15 to L.A.) on her way home from a Vegas vacation (no temperature gauges in many cars back then). Once it was towed back to LV, she told my dad that he could have it if he wanted to rebuild the engine. He did... And SOMETIMES I got lucky and he let me drive it. That baby cornered like it was on rails! (My dad just LOVED hearing me say THAT! )

Actually - your post is right on topic. The others kind of drifted. My original intention was to point out that cars we considered dorky which we wouldn't be caught dead in are now some of the coolest collectibles out there. The 59 Rambler is a perfect example. How about the Studebaker Lark (oops - showing my age ) or the old Edsels?

We must be about the same age... My dad drove a Studebaker before we moved from California to Las Vegas. It looked like the one in this link, only ours was badly faded and oxidized pale yellow. (my dad wasn't real big on spending any kind of money on the cars he only drove to work and it wouldn't have made it across the Mojave Desert ) : http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/stud5303.htm

My first car was a hand-me-down 74 Mercury Montego 4dr. I call it my BCC (birth-control car) because there was no way I could pick up chicks in that car.....
I always call that genre "GrampaCars" (yep, all one word )
I took my drivers' license test in my mom's '66 Chrysler 300... an absolute BOAT! DMV rep gave me three shots at parallel parking that behemoth - didn't happen. He passed me anyway because it was my 16th birthday and I was able to tell him that you only had to drive 15 in a school zone during the hours posted and it was 25 other than that for the residential area where it sat.
That car is still in Las Vegas and in pretty good shape... I saw a young man (twenty-something) driving it a couple of months ago while I was heading home from work... He looked very happy in it - made me smile.

Yeah, I'm 24. I have a good job and make really good money for my age w/ no college degree ($31k). Probably going to go back to become a CPA, since they can do almost anything and make great money.
2 questions
Where's Coppel TX? (I'm from Houston)?
What's a decent apartment cost around there?
Here you go.. these were cars.. that should never have been made.
First car was a 69 newport.. 4 door.. man that was a beast used 3 quarts of oil a day.
When it died. 74 ford ltd 4 door.. another beast.. caught it on fire..
It's replacement was a 73 hornet wagon that thing was an electrical nightmare.. but lowering it by cutting the springs made it look good oh and the self installed tint... that was a chick snagging machine.. lol.

I learned how to drive on my mom's 1988 Pontiac Sunbird. I took my test in my 1988 Chevrolet Corsica. The Corsica sucked so bad. It went from 0 - 60 in a weekend and was less fuel efficient than a Lamborghini Murcielago, thankfully back in 1998 gas was about 83 cents a gallon (I sure miss those days!!) in my area. Funny thing about taking my driver's test was that the instructer either stopped the test or never started the test due to the Corsica failing one (minor) safety aspect or another. I don't miss that car and hope to never see another Corsica in my life again, lol.
My first car was a 1985 dodge aries. It came from a junkyard on a tow truck. Man it had mutant roaches in it. Took 3 cans of that raid household fumagater to kill em

This wasn't my first car but it was the dorkiest. In my collage days I drove a, if I remember correctly, 60 Plymouth Lancer. You know the one that had the bird bath on the deck lid and slanty eyed tail lights, ugly as sin. It had a 170 ci slant 6 with 85 hp. It was like an oxidized silver color. Called it the silver bullet.

Mine was a 1968 Dodge Polara tank. My ubddies and I would have contests on who could knock over the most "Drive In speaker" poles at the Drive In theaters. I bet i knocked down 300 of them in 3-4 different counties, lmao.
I was suppose to get my Grandmothers 1964 Chevrolet Nova when my grandparents were ready to sell it BUT they sold it out from under me. They were afraid i was going to turn it into a Hot Rod,man that car was SOOOOO nice. I can remember going to KMart with my Grandma in it and when we got home i would get a bowl with a little bit of dishsoap in it and wipe down the dash and wipe off the seats in it.Man all that chrome on the dash was awesome! That car was as mint a car as i had seen.Untouched and babied for its whole life.Grandpa ordered it new in 64 and they sold it in 1990.ready for this........ with an amazing 3,218 miles on it!! Guy that came to look at it thought that it was a misprint in the newspaper ad,didnt even drive it.Grandpa sold it for $3500 and was very proud that he made about $1000 on it and had it for 26 years, lmao. I about fell over. White w blue hardtop and some wire basket hubcaps on it that were a real bite to clean.Had a slant six in it and the brakes would throw you against the front window in it. Grandma never liked the brakes i think thats why it was sold eventually. Sold it and he bought here a Dodge Aries, lol. Brent
Haha... these are all awesome. Well, with me only being about 21, I've had quite a few cars...
1. 1991 Sunbird 110hp 5 spd. doors were rusted halfway up on each side, below the trim was just primer, and when you started it up, it revved in the 2k for about 1.5 mins... haha. I looked like a moron driving from school in that thing. Sad thing is that it was actually one of the nicer looking cars in my high school lot. Paid... TOO MUCH!
2. 1987 Camaro... rusty... black sport coupe, black interior with 135 hp 2.8L v6 (fuel injected!), automatic. I got it running and drove it a bit before I started having problems with it stuttering when you'd get on it. It sounded mean and cornered like no other, but I will never buy another Camaro.
3. 1990 Olds Cutless Supreme. Beautiful shiny black, olds 442 180hp High Output Quad 4 (VERY RARE, only in that model year), 5spd! A blast to drive, but blew the head two weeks after buying it. Fixed it and drove it for another year. But, I had to sell it to afford college. Had digital dash and everything. I miss that car. My gf at the time actually wasn't embarrased to ride in it!
4. Current: 1994 Taurus SHO. 220hp yamaha high output 3.2L engine, auto. You can smoke the tires easily (as well as you could in a FWD). I like it. I should post some pics of it on my profile.
PS: Just got back from Brandon's a little while ago, GT. Good as usual

You Americans, well I'm one too now, but anyways, you had all the cool cars with big displacement engines, autos, sofa front seats, you name it!!!
I had a 1976 BMW 320 my dad made me pick out (he said any car I'd like for under $5K and preferably German)... "go pick out a working, safe car that will start in the winter"... (he had other plans, we'll get there.) As I did he had to leave for work, a few months in Singapore or was it Bangkok? When he came back I had her, home tinted windows, generic moonroof, black plastic spoiler, 15" SS rims (that was LARGE wheels in 1990) with 225's, no powersteering whitch sometimes was dangerous with those tires and a AM steeringwheel the size of a one person pizza... then I had about the same amount of money as in the whole car (I bought and added those previous things, sigh, am embarrast) in a Pioneer stereo that made the whole car rattle and jump, in that order... popping fuses left and right... I checked the fuel and topped off the oil... oh what a car!! Rear wheel drive in Finland, teach you how to drive... remember once I took it in for some service, they put her on the lift, the right rear was hanging about a fot under the car, the left was close to two feet down... awesome... when dad came back he told me to drive him to VEHO (Merceds and BMW dealer) I did and was all proud driving my dad for the first time legally... as we walked in I was assuming he was there in regards to one of his many AMG's... I stopped and druled over the burgundy M3 I've looked at SO many times... owner came out and asked dad if it was finally time and dad said yes... I could see all got excited and tense as I knew them from shopping spare parts and/or just stopping by for the free coffee and/or to check out the M3 that didn't get sold, ever... dad told me let's go to the shop and we did... just tooled around and walked up around the building, as we came up the M3 was out and dad opened the door and said "here you go, I never meant for you to buy your own car, I just wanted to teach you what to look for and how to negotiate buying a car..." sorry about the long story, am getting all sentimental... Still can't believe nobody told me in our small town in 7 weeks that car was mine and I went to ask for the key just to sit in it... sigh... good times!!
So my first car was a joke home made M3 wanna be and the second the real deal... I know, spoiled bratt...

1. First car - 1972 Nova - doesn't sound dorky, but it had the straight six with the 2-speed auto power-glide transmission... what a slug!
2. 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger - sounds dorky, but it had a built 340 in it. Probably the fastest car I've ever owned.
3. 1980 Mercury Capri - Looked real nice, but only had the 4-banger in it. It was also my first brand new car purchase.
4. 1980 Olds Cutlass 4-door.... during the dark ages of my life.... the worst and probably the dorkiest car I've ever owned.
5. 1979 Ford Fiesta - another car that sounds dorky, but it was one of the funnest cars to drive I've ever owned (it was one of the German import models). It got over 30mpg, was quick, and it was so small I could park it anywhere.
6. 1978 Chevy Luv pickup - probably the dorkiest and least practical pickup truck ever produced. It had the 4-cyl Isuzu engine with a 4-speed.
