So, my only performance mods are borla cat-back and a k&n aircharger, and i have 5-speed. My friend's 2004 350Z has borla cat-back and some CAI too, we are both automatic but he has the tiptronic thing where he can easily shift. So we decide to see who wins a race. I try with the normal 'D' and he kicked my ass big time up till 140 km/h. we go again but I try with the '1 2 3' setup and I was kickin his ass up till I shifted to 'D'. So, what's the deal here? Sometimes I win, sometimes he does, but I'm thinking the Z has much more acceleration (probably a weight thing). The questions are: Will a predator programmer make me a winner? How should I control my leg on the acceleration pedal so that the system shifts whenever I want?
Thanks guys, I really wanna add the 350Z on my 'smoked list'!

I wouldn't think you would need any mods to beat a stock Z. If you both had the same mods, imnot sure how he could keep up. Are you actually getting any gains from your aircharger? I know there were lots of reviews about intakes that don't requires tunes which don't really give you any gains. No tune, no increase in airflow. And maybe his intake did give him a serious gain...i guess it's possible he could keep up.

HE has got you on power to weight ratio... he should win as close to stock as you both are, but you will probably pull away after you get past 80 -90 mph as those cars being a V6 dont have the torque that we do.
Thos cars are good for low 14's high 13's stock, same as a Mustang GT. That would explain why you win sometimes and why he does others.
As far as mods to win. Try a 4.10 gear. The predator will help, but honestly I would order a real intake (C&L or JLT) that has a larger MAF and requires a special tune. THat should give you the edge, but still you will have to drive atleast as good as him. Though, if you do the INtake, Tuner, and gear... you shoudl have a good advantage.

yeh the k&n doesn't require any tune, but i think i need one. I dont know if you're talking from experience but the Z is not an easily kill, and I'm not sayin I killed it anyway, I'm saying I barely won.

It's not torque you need at higher speeds, its horsepower. Like Kyle pointed out, he's got you on power to weight ratio so your best bet is to race him from a dead stop. You dont have any real advantage racing from a roll. Do it from a stop where your bigger torque numbers give you an advantage off the line.
it's like this, the automatics shifts whenever it feels like it, all races were from a dead stop, I didn't feel the torque I have. The second gear shifted from 6 rpm but didn't start from 1 rpm, it went from 5 to 6 again all the way to third.
also, do u guys know what happens when you shift to 'D' after '3'? does it go to fourth gear or down shifts? thanks

Even going WOT on the interstate, I was able to pull away from one..he tried till about 115 and decided as my back bumper passed his front that he couldn't take me. It was not a real "smoked him" thing, it took a few seconds, but it was not a barely passed him either.
I posted a while back about that guy, some smarty pants that couldn't accept that a Mustang passed him on the right when he wouldn't get out of the left hand lane.

My Mustang GT is faster than the 350Z I traded. I have made several time test and all have been better than the Z was. I have no rgrets about getting rid of the Z.
i dont have any problems with the average 350z either...a modded up one is badass but the equal stock battles are a joke...btw...whats the 1 2 3 thing?
Need to get a custom tune to adjust your shift points & line pressure (firmness). Also, with the K&N and no tune, you might actually be running a little too lean. Get a tuner and you'll be able to resolve both.

I would think that it goes into 4th followed by 5th which would be your OD.
The reason you dont "feel it" is probably because of the Stock Ford settings from the computer which dumb down the performance a little. You can remove that lag with a tuner, I'm sure some of your fellow S197's on here have already done this.
You have a 4 speed auto with electronic OD. So you have 1, 2, D (which is 3rd) and 4th which is your OD. Your tranny will shift into 4th (OD) on its own as long as you leave OD on.

That's exactly how I have been beating the crap out of the Zs - once we shift into 3rd they keep even, just three or so car lengths behind.
