Sirius is $12.95 per month and XM is $11.87 per month.
With the discussions here about the Shaker system etc, I wondered how many people ordered a satellite radio with the new car vs. how many took the radio because it came with the car when purchased.
I know very little about it - do you have to pay the monthly fee to get any kind of media on the radio?
I bought my car off the lot and it had the Shaker 1000... I thought it sounded good... until I put a Pioneer headunit in!! OMG!!! What a big improvement! Couple of days later I upgraded the rear deck speakers... that was an improvement also!
Now... I have XM and I love it!!! Well worth it... although the commericals on some of the channels is getting very annoying! Commercial free my butt! LOL! I live in an area were we have:
1) Hard Rock-Heavy Metal
2) Top 40
3) Country
and that's it!!
It's nice to be able to listen to the type of music I want, whenever I want... Of course I listen to the comedy channels quite a bit.. LOL!
I have the Shaker 500 with an after market Sirius add on connected through the AUX port on the radio. I have also added a iPod connector to listen to tunes. I have removed my AM/FM antenna which aids in the removal of my car cover. I never listen to over the air radio now that I have 2 other sources for music. I am looking into replacing the S500 with an aftermarket head unit that incorporates the Sirius, iPod and bluetooth with touch screen controls. Having everything displayed on the 6.5 inch screen will be a pleasure. I love Sirius for the channel selections and feel its worth the subscription fee. My wife has Sirius in her car and her rate is $6.48/month. If you add a Sirius unit to the account then the rate is 1/2.
I would not spend the money for the S1000 if removing the head unit is in the future. When I was ordering Marcus, the upgrade from the 500 to the 1000 was about $1200. I can get a 6.5 in indash DVD player with Sirius, iPod adaptor and Bluetooth intigrated for the same price. For more $$$, I could add navigation to the same unit. I dont need the Nav in Marcus. He goes to work once a week, Home Depot several times a week and Taco Bueno or Whataburger a few times. He knows how to get to those places with out any help.
Marcus, the internet is an amazing tool, here is a link for a Pioneer headunit that has everything but bluetooth, for under $700! You can buy the xm radio rcvr with the gps traffic for less then $180 from elsewhere on the net. I think it will cost around $15 a month to subscribe to the whole package, but it might pay for itself if you fight big city traffic. http://buyeretail.com/product.asp?fi...CD2&sku=AVICD2
I would use Crutchfield to find something that fits with all the bells and whistles then go to pricegrabber.com or pricefish.com to see what kind of money you can save. I am waiting till next month to make my decision, because I will probably do my own installation.
I have used Crutchfield before and like their service. Usually included with their merchandise are the proper wiring harnesses for the installation. There is no cutting or splicing of the factory wires. If you want to re-install the factory radio, no problem. Unplug the connectors and re-connect the radio. You can save hundreds on a sale of this size but what is it worth having an unmolested harness.
Just something else to consider. I will look into it also.
Marcus...can I ask how hard it was to hook to the AUX port on your S500? I have the same system but want to hook my portable SIRIUS receiver to it temporarily. My main unit is still in the Ranger so I only pay the $6.48 for the additional unit until I upgrade the whole system.
fishingjts...you should switch to Sirius...only commercials I hear are on Stern, and those are few and far between.
vintageV8...I can tell you I have not listened to AM/FM at ALL for over a year now...but do yourself a favor and check the listing for SIRIUS adn XM to determine which offers you more of the channels you will listen to. Remeber people used to say, "You pay for your TV channels?"

I have had XM since 01. If you buy a yearly or multi-year subscription it is a lot cheaper, around $7 a month. Once you listen to XM, You wont go back to FM.

XM,
An armed man is called a citizen.A disarmed man is called a subject.
JustGo....It was easy. I got a P.I.E. FRD04-AUX 2004-2006 Ford CAN-Bus Auxiliary Input Converter from LogJam Electronics ---> http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piefrd04aux.html and that gave me the RCA connectors for my Sirius StarBase Sat radio. I actually bought a "Y" adaptor from Radio Shack and hooked the Sirius up to one side and a 3.5mm male plug to the other side to attach to my iPod headphone jack. It works but I would really like a all-in-one integrated system that controls all of the different sources from the head unit. Its hard to see my Sirius head unit and I have to control the iPod at the iPod. The iPod screen is hard to see while driving. Also, toooo much time with my eyes off of the road.
The PIE adaptor is a plug-N-play unit. No splicing into the main wiring harness EXCEPT for the power wire. If I remember correctly, I spliced into the radio power wire with an inline connector. Its was a quick fix for me until I got a more suitable headunit that has all of the bells and whistles I want. Like Bluetooth!
Getting into the center console is a breeze if you know how to attack it. I have the instructions that I can give you or you can do a search in this forum and can find it here.
I`ve had Sirius for over a year now and regular radio doesn`t exist anymore. I put a Alpine head unit in and between the Sirius and the I-pod hookup it`s all I liisten to. No comercials on any music channels and plenty of content. Go to the two companys websites and see for yourself which one has the content your looking for. It works out to less than 50cts a day.
Once you go satellite, there's no turning back. As far as commercials go, they usually only have them on the talk stations.
When it comes to choosing Sirius or XM, it boils down to the extras.
The music channels are basically the same, so it's the sports packages (NFL for Sirius, MLB and NHL for XM) and the Howard Stern vs. Opie & Anthony factors that allow you to make your decision.

I have a PNP Sirius unit I use between my company car and my Mustang. The family Suburban has XM. I like the programming on Sirius better. Specifically, the comedy channels and the kids programming on Sirius are better. Plus I am a huge HS fan.
One factor may be what sports you like ot listen to, as each carries specific licenses for various pro and collegiate sports.
All in all, as many have said, regular radio may as well no longer exist.

NASCAR comes to Sirius in '07
