Angry Freedom of Speech

I was going to keep quiet about this but it really is not my style to do so. I am concerned about this site.

Recently I posted a thread simply stating that I did not care for the interior design of a particular car, and as such I was flamed by the administrators. I find that concept to be a bit odd. Here on this site where I thought we were allowed to express our opinions, regardless of whether they are well liked. But I guess I was wrong.

Apparrently, it is okay for some people to flame others, such as some GT owners flaming V6ers; Mustangs flaming Chevys, Hondas, etc.; the older crowd flaming the younger crowd (or vica-versa), everyone giving their opinions about certain modifications and such, but not for others...however I have never seen anyone's thread get locked out for "adding no value to the site". I am highly disappointed in such reaction by the moderators.

As a gentleman, I will apologize if my opinion offended anyone, but I wont appologize for stating such. As I once said in a previous thread, I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will die fighting for the right for you to say it. I expect the same in return.

In my opinion, it is a sad state of affairs when we live by the ridiculous theory that we as Americans have the right to freedom of speech, so long as we do not offend anyone or hurt anyone's feelings.

I am not easily offended, but this notion of inhibitting freedom of speech offends everyting I believe in. As such, I will step off my soap box now and say farewell to my brothers and sisters on this site. For apprently my opinions are deemed not appropriate for thsi site. I hope you all enjoy your Mustangs for as long as you own them. It saddens me greatly to say, I will no longer be joining you on this site (or at least for some time).

With my final "opinion" stated, I bid you all a farewell. May you all have a happy holidays!

As someone who gets flamed quite often, and has had threads locked for reasons unknown to me in the past only to have County get them re-opened, I can say that the mods are human.

Same as you & me.

I forgive their tresspasses as I hope they'll forgive mine.

That never made me quit -having someone try to get me fired did -but it turned out to be no one from here that did it.

Sometimes, I think, they'll shut it down and let people cool off and unlock them.

Either way, I've probably had more threads locked down in one month (maybe in 1 week [-heck! maybe even 1 DAY]) that you've probably had in all your time here.

C'est la vie, man.

Take a deep breath, and think "Y'know, my bashing of that car, what is it really worth?"

you might surprise yourself with the answer . . ..

Kinda' hurts the 1st time, but then your thin skin become rawhide.

Kinda like nghtrnnr.

He looks like a old leather boot, now . . .

Shoot, some of the biggest flamers of all time are Moderators now, and they were they were the ones responsible for a bunch of lockdowns. Maybe they're a little edgy with the line, -seein' as how some of 'em have stepped over it (er, a LOT), but everyone will figure it out.

With me, it's "sticks-n-stones." But other people are really hurt by the slings and arrows of the members.

I reckon enough people have complained that the pendulum is swingin' the other way, -dialectics aside I'm not into bashing other people's rides, because they're just cars, and if every car looked the same, we'd be in the Soviet Union.

You don't know what ugly is until you see something beautiful, and you don't know what beauty is until you see something ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm not willing to pass judgement on someone else's ride, because it's not mine.

-Not my idea of beauty, not my idea of ugliness.

Someone may think my car is plain, another that's it's subtle, another that it's the coolest thing running. I get stopped all the time by people who think it's cool, but I'm sure the guy selling the car on e-bay does, too.

To each his own.

I can see that defining perjurative terms can be a problem. In this PC age, what were once mild complaints trigger street riots, while what were once dark moral issues which were often grounds for public suicide are now the subject of prime time sitcoms.

"Rice" as a portion of a nasty put down could indeed constitute grounds for criticism - but I must agree that I find this particular example puzzling. The initial post by mrvandermey seemed well spoken and quite mild - with clear photos posted for all to contemplate and thus form their own conclusion. Even if it were MY car pictured (and well it might have been - my personal ride is indeed somewhat altered from its Fordish form), I doubt I would have taken strong umbrage.

Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Even so, I'll call upon mrvandermey to give the mods (and the rest of us) a little leeway. I believe running something like AFM must be akin to herding cats over thin ice to safety. Ocassionally, the tuning and tweaking gets a bit heavy, and the ice breaks, resulting in some wet and angry cats, when all along the intent was not to cause damage, but the opposite.

Moderators and Administrators, sirs, how about we unlock this one and see how it develops?

Or has the term "rice" become a trigger word on these forums?

Mind if I ask what the admin(who can remain anon since I didn't read the post), what he said?

I see those kinda comments all the time..."that looks too riced out". Never saw it offend anyone on here before.

some Asians consider it a racist term . . .

-especially since big and littles and obnoxious exhaust on an American car isn't considered Corn -(OR IS IT?! -I called em CORNY all they time!!)

-and obnoxious European vehicles aren't considered Wheat, Barley, Sorghum, Oats, or Rye.

I haven't read the thread that is being talked about but from what I've read on this one I don't think that Mr V's comments warranted a lockout. I mean we've all posted about mods that we liked and mods that we were not too fond of. So what is the problem with someone saying the interior was riced out. We have all used the term before with no disciplinary actions so what's the difference now?

Bryan's Rice-Boy Page

This guy was probably the first to define "rice" as we know it today. That page has been there for almost a decade.

The funny thing is, the guy is Asian, and denies that the term is racist.

"I am Asian, and Asian Rice-Boys make Asians in general look bad. Contrary to what the average Asian rice-boy believes, rice-boys are a very small minority among the population of Asian Americans. Most Asians, in fact, think that rice-boys look and act stupid. But since the rice-boy part of the Asian population is by far the most visible (who would miss that huge ugly sticker and that giant wing with the loud exhaust if it passed by them?), there are quite a few people (Asian and non-Asian) who believe that all Asians think it is cool to be a rice-boy. The Asians who think that way do, mostly because all they do is hang out with other people who think the same way and never see themselves from an outside point of view... so they naturally think that everyone thinks the same way they do since all of their friends think the same way. The non-Asians who think that way do because it seems like whenever they see an Asian, he is inside one of those annoying (highly visible cars). They don't really notice all the other ones that just drive around in normal cars... because it doesn't grab their attention. So this page is here to show people (Asian and non-Asian) that not all (and in fact, most) Asians do not think it is cool to be a rice-boy. "

Rice originally referred to "rice burners," small-bore Japanese motorcycles that were putting American Motorcycle companies out of business.

But then the guy from that page used it when referring to crappy Japanese cars that overstated their performance, usually by members of Japanese Car Clubs.
