Does anyone know the best way to remove the antenna from our cars? As I thought, I got a deluxe car cover for Christmas, however in order to use it properly, it requires the removal of the antenna since it does not come with a prefab hole in which to slide the antenna through thus preventing the cover from being put on the back half of the car. Reading the instructions of the cover, it only gives information on how to puncture a hole in the material only if the antenna is detachable. I tried for at least an hour this morning trying to get the antenna off. Even tried with a pair of plyers which is probably the dumbest and most hurtful thing I've done to my Mustang as the antenna is scratched pretty bad and will need a replacement (factory or aftermarket) sometime soon.
I replaced my antenna with a shorty (6"), it just unscrewed right off. No damamge to car or antenna. I have since replaced my 6" shorty antenna with a 9" shorty antnna, again it just screwed off.
I use a 10mm wrench to remove the antenna and then I put one of those black plastic push fasteners into the hole so that no moisture can get into the antenna mount hole and then I cover the car. I'm talking about a much smaller version of the plastic fastener that keeps your hood liner in the engine compartment in place. And to ensure I don't damage the paint at the bottom of the antenna itself I place a small piece of thin cloth inside the open box 10mm wrench.
Just put the antenna inside your car (back seat or where ever) before putting your cover on. Just reverse the process after you remove your cover.
When you re-install your antenna...don't overtighten it...
Thanks, I was finally able to get the antenana off with a wrench...just wished I didn't scratched the base of the antenna the first time I attempted to do it.

sand it and use touch up paint.

I bought this antenna delete nub from UPR and painted black myself. Then I installed this interior amplified antenna that works just as well if not better than the factory antenna. As a bonus I don't have to bother with the antenna when I'm putting my car cover on.
It unscrews with a normal counterclockwise thread. I had to use a pair of rubber-tipped channel locks to get it started - the threads are clean, but it had either frozen on REEEEAL good or they used a clear loc-tite (more likely). The shorty antennas are a big improvement anyway - I went with a 14" fixed black one.
Now, as for why Ford went with a huge, black plastic antenna mount...
