By looking at the timing on the video he's running around 2:05. which I think is very good.
Someone I know with an M3 on modded suspension, StopTech 14" Brakes and Michelin Cup Tires is running 1.57.
The 2004 Grand Am GS Audi S4 set a record lap of 1:47.56
It's nice to see that the stang is that good with so few mods on a roadrace course. I am impressed, I wouldn't have thought that a mildly modded car would do so well.
I am going to do a couple of track days with my car next year strictly for fun. It's nice to know I will not have a huge equipment handycap.

We think of our Mustangs as muscle cars, which of course they ARE first and foremost. However, the S197 is able to handle the turns surprisingly well, especially with a few bolt on suspension modifications. That can make them good road course cars. And, although they are not good for auto cross (heavy, long wheel base, large polar moment) I have been able to beat out some and at least present a challenge to some other very respectable auto cross cars. Putting a S197 on an auto cross track really challenges the car's capability, but it does amazingly well.
IMO, on this site one must assume that suggestions for performance improvement are referring to straight line acceleration unless otherwise stated. But, there is a lot of good advice and references which will improve lateral stability and handling if you look for them.

I saw that you guys had link my YouTube video on this forum. I just wanted to revived this old thread by mentionning that this was my first time on that track and that I was running about 2:04 for a lap time. I'm glad to say that I've dropped 5 seconds off that time since on that road course. Here is vid of this past fall when I was chasing a M3:
BTW, the S197 Mustang really surprised people on a track; they all think it's only good for drag racing

Welcome to AFM and it looks like some great track time. I guess some people will want to know the name of the track and I woild like to know what tires you are using.

Thanks for the welcome !
The track is called “Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant” (http://www.lecircuit.com/) and is located 1h30 north of Montreal. A C.A.R.T. Series race was held this past summer there. It is a great track with a smooth surface and gorgeous scenery.
As for the tires, the ones I ran in 2006 (the videos referenced earlier in the thread) were some old Yokohama’s 032RS 275/40R17 all around, I used for autocross. This year, I went back to the best bang for the buck track tire: Toyo RA1 same dimensions. These are my dedicated track tires. I used some Cobra R 17x9 replicas as wheels. They were cheap but they weigh 26 lbs each ! I will upgrade to some decent price 16lbs 17x9 wheels next year to cut 10lbs of un-sprung weight per wheel; it should help a bit !
The S197 is a great track car. Like any other car, the only thing I would suggest is to replace the OEM braking fluid with something better (i.e. Motul RBF600), remove the dust shields and get better front pads. I found some great pads that lasted 6 tracks days and still have enough for maybe 2 days; the Cobalt Friction XR2. They outlasted my other pads by 2 to 1 even with my more aggressive driving this year.
This track is even more challenging ! Lots of blind apex and decreasing radius curves. Here is a video of my first time there:
Enjoy !

While were talking about track racing. What would you guys recommend tire size wise? I am running 255/45/18's all around what would be recommend for 18's for performance. And should I stick with same size all around. Keep in mind this is also a daily driver.

I would stick with that size or move up to 275/40R18 if you want but I don't think I would pay the extra for the 275s. A road course is not like drag racing; your front wheels will work as much or more than your rears so keep the same size all around. Eventually the fronts will round themselves on the edge so you can swap with the rears. After several track days, you can also have the tires remounted so that the inside is now on the outside.
I use smaller diameter for my track tires (same as pre-05 OEM diameter) as they are more available and cheaper. They also able you to lower the CoG, reduce the un-sprung weight and accelerate a bit faster. You don't really care that the speedo might be off for the track. In my case, I also have a SCT tuner so I can compensate for the smaller diameter and adjust the speedo accordingly.
My 2 cents

hey if you're looking to road race, go look up griggs suspension and grab your checkbook. from what ive read they are the stuff to have. and from what i can see their stuff is alot better.
the saleen watts link or one of them was recalled too.
