Best price for a supercharger... among other questions....
I am having trouble finding the best price for a supercharger. The car's been bugging me for the longest time, but I am on a tight budget. I have looked around, and I believe I need just a tuner kit. I am looking for a non-intercooled (for now, unless I find a real good price) Vortech. I plan on using Kenne Bell's boost-a-pump, rather than up the fuel pump, because I think it may be easier for me. I can find 39-lb injectors, and I already have a Predator. Originally, I bought a CAI kit which included a Predator Programmer and K&N pipe; do I need a 90mm mass air meter? I think I can get a custom tune from Predator, but I should probably do it the right way and go to a local shop to get dyno tunned. Any advice for me? I guess I want to keep under $4000 for parts and (my) labor.

Now my labor does that mean your doing it your self... I am a firm believer in doing things right. the first time and save trouble later. I blew my motor the first day i got my car back now it went from a 6000$for the supercharger and parts to another 6000 for my new motor and plus sense my rod went through my starter and oil pan lol i had to replace that and port and polish my heads and get new valves. This is the best thing you can do is go to modularmustangracing.com they have a pretty good turbo kit there for a good price.
What I would do is pull your motor out and buy there 5.0 stroker motor and get your heads done. That should set you right at 4000 if you can do your own labor your right on the money. The stroker motor with heads your looking about 340 to the wheels. Now you have bullet proof moto that is using an 04 cast iron block. No worries
You buy that Vortec you will have soooo much strain on your stock block i would be scared to drive it. Especially with out a intercooler. For instance my buddy blew his motor with a 4-5lb pully on a stock roush charger. Thoughs are ment to be safe but its still possible. You would have to run really low boost. I think 8 is honestly pushing it. Some get away with it and some dont. but if you are one of those who dont then your with out a car.
With out the complete kit of a supercharger you wont get much power running 4-5psi my buddy only dynoed at 375. With some bolt ons an aggressive tune and the stroker motor you will be right there and a good motor and next year buy your charger and boost it to 14 and then watch as the roses fall from the sky...
Just think long and hard and i wouldn't do it if your on a budget. you will run into more problems then its worth and be FORCED to spend more money. Like replacing flywheels, Clutches, Driveshafts, Transmissions. Think about all the other mods... Suspension hooking up is half the battle too... DOnt want to sound negative about a supercharger its just after blowing your motor it opens your eyes up alot
Hey tact,
Thanks for the quick reply... checked out the website, but I'm just looking for a Vortech blower to put out 5 or 6 psi. Pretty mild, not looking to make much more power, and I think the stock block can handle it. Install's not too difficult, just time consuming. I also believe in doing things right the first time, just no need to have a forged bottom end. 420 at the motor is good enough for me. I'm looking at a street car, 91 octane all the time. Aftercooler will come soonafter, just not right now. Besides, it's a Vortech (vs Saleen or Roush), which means the strain on the motor's only when I'm driving the full 6 lbs... Your car looks like a beast, and with all the insurance you put in the block, you wouldn't have any problems with creating a 900 hp car, I'm just not going in that route...

You will need a 90mm MAF to fit between the intake and filter. Why not get a CAI from Ti he'll have one available soon!
+1 on the intercooler. That's not something to skimp on. Increased IATs under pressure can lead to detonation which is the killer. I think it's a must have for FI'd S197s.

It's all in the tuning. You can blow one up at 6 psi as easily as you can at 10 psi. I'm running with 10 psi on stock internals but my tuning is done by JDM engineering who is the best in the business when it comes to the Saleen S/C.
IMHO if you can't afford to rebuild it if you blow it up then don't install a S/C.

Both valid points made.. Steve from modernspeedmachines.com has some pretty good set ups as well. You should think about some other upgrades as well. With that charger i think you would be looking more at 350-370 to the wheels. Thats what my friends roush charger put out at that boost. So you will still be in the 12's with a decent set of tires.
If you put 4.10's, Good tune, Charge Motion Deletion Plates, Underdrive Pully, Spark Plugs, Race Oil Pan, Alum Fly Wheel, New Clutch, Short Throw Shifter, (forget the pullys if you want to S/C in the future 7 hp to me isnt worth it)
You should be right at your buget and running a mid 12 enough to keep up with a vette im sure. That and you are well set up for a supercharger still. a supercharger is the most expensive mod there is. I spent 5300 on my procharger and ended up dropping another 1000 lol just for things that needed to be placed that wasnt in the kit. IE Spark Plugs, 42lb injectors, fuel pump( u said though it comes with one i think) you should get gears too.
Thanks, guys! I'm going with Vortech tuner kit with the aftercooler, but still going to run prob 6 lbs of boost. 3.73s in the back. I vaguely remember superchargers4less giving me a good deal, but there's another company in the 818 area code (MMR, I think?)... that might be able to beat it...

I will stand by MMR they are great guys and will work with you as well. They are the guys who i got my stroker, heads, clutch, shifter, spark plugs, oil pan, flywheel from... They are building a 06 i think twin turbo gt that is INSANE if you live around that area i would advise stopping by to check it out
Water or water/methanol injection would allow you to run 5-6 psi easily without an intercooler. For some reason water injection isn't often mentioned in discussions of forced induction but it works incredibly well and is cheap to boot.
True.. it does work, and your tuner can set it up 'failsafe' but I still would be weary... plus I would worry about the level... too much worries... not smooth... if you just want the power and are going to keep something 'fueled' the cheapes is N2O...
