I just happened to visit edmunds.com to look at more cars (don't have any clue as too why...), and they are flashing a featured article. They are trying to build a Shelby GT500 killer from a 2005 Mustang GT they used for a long term test for $5k less than a Shelby GT500 (sticker...i.e. without the INSANE dealer premiums we all enjoy). So far they just have a list of the parts they've installed and reasons why. Interesting list. Have a look:
Not to hard to do that. Basically the GT needs a supercharger or turbo. BAM. That's it. With the weight advantage, the GT will win.
Only thing is the GT500 has a forged internal kit, so their engine will be stronger and has more potential.
As I always say, as soon as you mod, all bets are off. You drop a couple thousand into a GT500 you will push 600+ easy. It will take a forged kit inside the GT to get up there. GT500's are (as much as I'd hate to admit it), good bang for the buck.

I don't know, 45K sticker for the GT 500, 25K for my GT. For another 20K I can have a built engine, S/C and around 600 HP at the rear wheels. Not too hard. I think bang for buck the GT is really hard to beat.
I posted actually wondering what you guys thought of the parts that they used...Vortech snail, Tokico D-Specs, Eibach Pro Springs, Hurst Shifter, MagFlow Mufflers, Adj 3rd Link...It's almost like they were scouting this forum and built the parts list from it. However, good parts is good parts...so universally we all come to the same conclusion.
Still, I think the forum should get credit...
To paraphase, the GT500 dominated the dyno and the drag strip (even with the drag radials and the skinnies). However, the built GT handled better (skidpad and slalom), but the GT500 still was better off on a road course because of the better brakes (they only added Hawk pads to the GT's stock system).
Later.

EPA Estimates say 17/25...so why am I getting only 13? Oh...wait...nevermind.
