What many people don't understand is that the 500 replaced the Crown Vic, NOT the Taurus. The Taurus was replaced with the "more hip" fusion.
It's Ford's fault that trucks outsell it's cars... I see 2 truck commercials for every 1 car commercial from them. I definatly see many more import car commercials than from Ford. Maybe its marketing tactics are hurting them as much as their vehicle line up. With that said - I actually like all the cars Ford has out. Each one serves a specific need.

True, but the Ford 500 is closer in size to the Taurus than it is to the Crown Victoria. The Fusion is closer in size to the COuntor/Tempo than the Taurus. The Taurus was always the biggest car in that niche (i.e. the Honda Accord, Toyota Camery, etc).
LOL, Pinto- I remember seeing one of those w/ huge tires on the back and jacked up about 4' in the rear. It actually had like a 350 dropped in it and sounded pretty good, but funny looking.
How about the inspiring names from the luxury car manufacturers?
Think about it... their numbers or alpha numeric in many (most) of the models. (Nearly all, if not all BMW & Mercedes)

For what model year?? The Crown Vic is still being manufactured for 2007.
From what I read, the Ford Crown Victoria will stay in production to at least 2009...well the Mercury (don't call me Grand) Marquis will stay in production until 2009 which makes me think Ford will keep the Crown Vic in production until that time as well. Also read that if Ford drops the Crown Vic (in it's current form) that the prototype Interceptor will become the new Crown Victoria and adopt the name.
The only problem with the Fusion becoming the replacement for the Taurus is that I don't think too many people (especially the older generation...the ones who would be inclined to buy a vehicle like a Taurus) saw it that way. Ford was/is trying to capture some of the youth market with edgy and youthful Fusion. In Ford's current line up, it's the second smallest sedan (behind Focus). The 500 is something that's more geared for the older generation, those who liked the simple amenities and size that the Taurus carried. I don't know about you guys but I've seen more of the older set driving around in Ford Taurus' than I have seen then in Crown Vics.
The Ford 500 is probably everything that the elder set would look for in a large size sedan and with the Taurus name attached to it, it can only get better.
Sorry. It turns out the car is not named the Ford "500". It's the Ford "Five Hundred". That's totally different. NOT.
Can you imagine the board room meeting?
Let's call it the 500.
No, we used that with the Galaxie 500.
Ok, then we'll spell it out, like with letters.
GENIOUS! BRILLIANT!
Give that man a raise and a corner office immediately!!
Have you seen the commercial with the board room full of chimps? Ford makes the chimps look SMART.

Yeah, it's amazing what gets through committee. New Coke? AMC Gremlin?
When I was deciding what car to get, I had it narrowed down to either the Crown Vic or the Mustang. I wanted RWD and the sedan would meet my needs well. However, I have no kids so a coupe would work too. Hmmmm. Not really a choice. The Crown Vic was cheaper but no one stops in the parking lot, to look at them. I figured the Mustang would actually draw crowds. I would look at a cool car in the parking lot, but for a Mustang, I would stop and go back to look closer.
The Fusion and the Five Hundred were never going to be options.

You could have gone for the Mercury Maurader...essentially a performance version of the Crown Vic...not as eye catching as the Stang...but impressive nonetheless.
On an ironic note, I just got my latested edition of Motor Trend in the mail yesterday. In there is an article introducing the 2008 Ford Five Hundred. I guess Ford's decision to rename it as the Taurus came after publishing that edition. Ooops, not good.
I did go for the Fusion AND the Stang (had Stang first). I was not as impressed with the Fusion as I had hoped to be.
