I've Been Saying the Ford 500 is a Stupid Name, Ford Agrees.
Many of you may have heard me RIP on Ford for many things lately, including the stupid name of the Ford 500. I called it unimaginative, uninspired and boring among other things.
Today I heard Ford is renaming the 500 to the TAURUS.
Oh, yeah, that's better. Why not Comet?

One of the more powerful cars around.
One of the slower cars around.
Makes me feel like a kid every time.
Actually I think using the Taurus nameplate is an excellent idea. In my opinion, the 500 should have been the next incarnation of the Taurus and I never understood why Ford dropped the Taurus nameplate. I agree with 5twenty, the name is kind of bland and really it sounds like the name for a Nextel Cup Race than the name of a car. I think Taurus was one of the best selling cars for Ford for many, many years. I think if they wanted to drop the Taurus nameplate they should have did it slowly (such as calling the car for the first couple years the Ford Taurus 500 and then drop the Taurus nameplate later in the model life). People no doubt will be more comfortable buying a car that has a positive history such as the Taurus has...and I'll bet that when the rebranded 500 goes on sale...it'll garner more sales on the Taurus nameplate than the 500 garnered on its current reputation.
The Taurus was a "Bread and butter" car for Ford for man years. It was a very innovative car in it's introduction.
I had a 98 Taurus, that thing was a great car. 200k Miles or so and all it ever needed was a battery. Oh, and I tend to drive my cars harshly...
One more vote for renaming it the Taurus.

Let's face it, many of us have always thought the Ford 500 was nothing but a New Tarus with a new name. On that note, we also think the Fusion is nothing more than the Ford Tempo or the Ford Contour, just redesigned and rebadged.

Someone up there at Ford ought to hire you, 06 Slvr Bullitt. But I don't think they like "idea" people. I'm not sure what happened when they made the S197. Blind mice find cheese occasionally. It's really good cheese, though.
Good call on the Nextel Cup race. It should be at Michigan International Speedway, the Ford 500, not sitting in my driveway!
