Cincinnati Microwave Has New Escort Radar Detector Out!
Escort just came out with the 9000i radar/laser detector and it now has GPS in it to mark speed traps. The old 8500 X50 was already better than the valentine, but now they've raised the bar again. Very expensive at $450, but that way I can leave my 8500 in the other car and put the 9000i in the stang. That $450 is pretty steep though.
its not 2 hard to remember where all the speed traps are. Atleast not for me. My dad has the valentine's etched into the mirrors by his audio guy. Its extremly slick. Ill try to get a pciture of it soon.

I'm not sure what to think about detectors. I graduated from Florida police academy and one of our instructors told us that they were a waste of money. He said that by the time your detector goes off, they already got you. But then again, if they are useless then why are they banned in some states? I would think that the only way it would help is if the radar/laser beams bounce off other cars and go in all directions and end up at your detector thereby warning you of radar in the area. However, if these waves dissipate and the multi-angle reflection does not set off your detector, then the detector is only going off when they have it aimed directly at your car and it will be too late. I guess it could deter you from getting a heavy foot in a certain area if you know radar is in the area and it could help that way. Is their anyone here with more of a technical background on how radar works? If so, is there enough of a benefit to having one or is it just a false sense of security for lead foot syndrome?

Zen, your theory is what Valentine says. I bought one a month ago, better some warning rather than none. Just worried about a false sense of security.

Got my radar detector and recieved a speeding ticket within about 2 hours of installation. Of course, he just replicated my speed, so the radar detector was silent. Whoops! Of course, I would rather have some warning than none at all, and many times I am able to pick up the distant signals from police way down the road with my X50, and have plenty of time to slow down if I am pushing the limit. As far as I know, you usually have a few seconds to slow down, unless of course they are directly shooting you with 'laser'... then you're hosed if you are going to fast. I am not very knowledgable (as you can tell) on this subject though, so perhaps somebody could enlighten us?
In my experience cops are rarely using radar these days, yes here and there but they are mostly shooting people with their laser guns. Laser blocker seems your best bet. Something along the lines of this.

Virginia is the only state where totally banned and they will confiscate your unit on sight. Your right about whats called "instant on", where NO radar det. will save the driver, but most of the time police units dont use instant on but rather a passive mode that detectors can pick up well ahead. Also if an officer uses instant on at one driver, this will give the next guy down the road a warning (if not too far away). The Valentine one is by far the best unit and almost always wins hands down on comparison tests with major car magazines and independant labs. Not only in sensitivity but the best thing is the arrows which tell you where to look in general. Nearly every exotic/supercar owner buys the Valentine One.
I had a Bel concealed unit in the Benz. It was around $1200 I think. It worked like a charm and easy to use. I totaled the car and that's the end of that.

All I can tell you is that mine has saved more more than once by going off when the radar was over a hill or around a corner. That statement about if the detector goes off that they have you is not right. Imagine your are in a very large dark room and a guy comes looking for you with a flashlight. You see his flashlight way before he sees you even if he points it right at you if you are out of his range. That's how these radar detectors work...they see the radar beam before it sees you. The only time they can beat you on that is instant on and laser and you still have the chance that they zapped somebody else (unless you're out in front). Most of the cops around here run with the radar going 100% and I pick them up way before they even see me. The Valentine One is really the only competition the Escort has, but the Escort has beat the V1 in more tests and Escort owns over 85% of the radar patents out there, yeah 85%. The other 15% of the patents are split out between all of the other detectors out there. Somebody over there knows radar detection.

It will aslo learn where radar operated doors are to stop giving you falses in that location at that EXACT frequency!
It will aslo be able to give a little bit better heads up on laser.
I have the 8500 hooked up to a Shifter, works like a charm. Even had a cop smiling shaking his head at me while shaking his laser gun as a joke... (i275 at Minneola Pike.)
Here around Cincinnati they're legal and you will need one... I have NO IDEA why cops are on the highways with speed traps... it's a traffic hazzard in my mind... ppl slamming the brakes when they see the copcar... go to a school zone or where kids play. Stop drivers leaving the pub for a breatalizer test... but com'n, get somebody for 75 on 65... sigh...

I've had a Uniden unit for years with the GPS feature...learns where false signals are, and then doesn't got off the next time you drive by there...I love it! It will also give you (via the GPS) an accurate reading of your true speed...I've noticed the speedo on my 'Stang is off a bit at highway speeds. You can enter a few locations (home, work, etc) into the device, and it will give you an ETA too...nice unit.
