Stock from the factory I really hated the automatic... the shifts were incredibly soft and SLOW! The car was upshift happy! At part throttle I was in 3rd gear by 16MPH! However that all changed with a tune! The car is now tuned to my driving style! And I love it!! The shifts points are right where I want them. With the X-Cal2 I can make the shifts a bit softer for daily driving but then I can really firm them up for the track! And for me the automatic has held up amazingly! This tranny is by far the best automatic I've ever owned... LOL
I completely agree with the idea of convenience in rush hour traffic.
However, I will always choose manual over automatic. There's just something about having control over your car in nearly every aspect. Plus, a manual keeps me focused on my driving and not the radio, or cell phone, or any...other...distractions. [\quote]
I agree with this statement, if you recall, my original question was for enthusiasts and people looking for hot rods. I believe the debate is simple for people who are scared of the stick, or city commuters but people who want to become one with their cars choose manual for the basic fact that they have more control.
So let me throw this out there to heat up the debate:
As the saying always goes: "If you're racing in a straight line, always buy the auto, if you're racing on a road course, always buy the stick..."
But why by an automatic to go in a straight line when you will only realize a .1 to .2 gain in a quarter mile yet loose in any race that has a turn. Wouldn’t the stick give you better odds in any race the more proficient you become at using it?
Oh, and how many cars that race NASCAR are auto?
Would you by the GT500 as an automatic???
maybe the s197 guys should stay out of it then cause youre using the old rules...they dont apply so much anymore...i've raced many a stick around the hunts point curve...curves dont mean a thing...and enough already with the scared of the stick garbage...makes no sense
I would only buy the stick in a performance car. But given, the auto in this car is faster in most every situation. I like the fact that the times are more dependent on my finesse. Besides, my left foot gets bored!!! and I love the sound of coasting down from 60 in second, of downshifting through the corners in my neighborhood, of kicking the clutch out and revving under a bridge......just more fun for me.

I hadn't driven a manual in 15 years but when I decided to buy the '07 I knew it had to be manual. To me it's part of the muscle car feel, big V8 and manual tranny. I don't race (yet) but accelerating semi-fast so you can upshift, timing your downshift while cornering and makes driving that much more fun. My everyday vehicle is an automatic and there's no comparison in the driving experience, but then it's not a Mustang either.

I had the 05 Mustang in Auto, and really missed the manual so traded the Auto in for a Manual a year later. Just lots more fun with the manual. BTW my daily driver is also a 5 speed manual colorado pick up. I can see Auto in various climates like in hilly and heavy traffic areas.
If every one liked autos, no manuals would be manufactured, and if everyone like manuals, autos would not be manufactured. Great about this country, we have a choice to choose our own liking.
Besides, those who buy manuals now will later buy autos, and those who buy autos now will later buy manuals, as our desires change thru life.

Well said!!! And will this subject EVER die? There is a reason both styles are made!!
One is probably more fun, the other one is for sure easier!! I would never buy a Mustang with the other one as long as I have two legs and arms... but that's me...
Also, my firends auto with 45 RWHP less spanked me EVERY time on the track while driving mid 13's...

I will tell you why I am getting an auto. I live in a very heavy traffic area, and I'm 63, and have had a 66 GT 4 spd., and a 97 Cobra 5 spd. I've driven the 07 auto. and find it very satisfying. I think in my situation it will be easier both on the car and myself with an auto. I will not be racing it, (unless I can scorch a ricer ), but will still get a thrill from the acceleration, torque, and sound.
I should have added that when I test drove it was an auto and I was quite IMPRESSED!! Then I had to drive a 4.0 to check out the 5-speed and that was okay... grant it the GT 5-speed was better... especially after the short throw... waz up Ford? It won't cost any more, it won't be any less safe with a desent shifter!!

Living in San Diego I didn't want to be shifting all the time, that's why I bought an auto. BTW, I learn with a big school bus how to drive a stick shift. The auto's I find to be better at the track, plus Don_W car is also a auto.
