Part of that time was spent in a ring and pinion nightmare I never want to relive. It all started with a leaky pinion seal. Many of you know I changed my stock gears from 3.55 to 3.90 that whined like a stuck pig from day one. They we not installed correctly or something and they failed and I had to put in new SVO 4.10s and a new carrier, etc. So I am very weary about anybody touching anything back there. It's also one of the only things I don't want to mess with because I've seen how much trouble they are.
Anyway, I took it to a highly recommended mechanic to change the pinion seal. I asked if there was anytning he was going to do that would make any noise appear in my gears. He assured me he was not.
Of course I pick up the car and the gears are howling. I'm flaming pissed and I go back to see what he was going to do about. Of course he claims he did nothing to make the gears whine and could do nothing. AARRRRGGGHH!!
So I'm done messing with it. I take it to Randy's Ring and Pinion, a ring and pinion only shop with 80,000 square feet of shop and warehouse. They've done only ring and pinion for 28 years. They are the best.
I told them these gears were good so I just wanted them to adjust them so they were quiet again. They said they could only gaurantee silent gears if I purchased new gears. I'm not in a gambling mood so I did it. I got the same SVO set they put in last summer that were slient from day one. I took a whole day off work and waited while they worked on it all day.
They put in 3 sets the first day and could not get any of them silent. They even brought in their top engineer then they brought in Randy himself. So I ended up bringing it back the next week because of my schedule. I dropped it off this time and said call me when you get it silent.
In the end they tried 8 different gear sets, including the originals, and could never get them silent. They found one set, in my car now, that was darn close, a slight noise I wouldn't have noticed between 50 and 55. In the end they refunded my entire bill for labor and parts. I got new gears, still have my old gears, and I'm 97% happy with how they sound.
I have had 11 sets of gears in my car at one time or another. I never want to have a ring and pinion issue EVER AGAIN PLEASE!!!!

Dan, you know I feel your gear pain. Though I'm only on set #4. So Randy himself couldn't get it quiet? What else could be causing the noise? Well, at least you got a new set for nothing!

Man, that's some odyssey. It was very nice of them to refund your money like that. That kind of service is a rarity these days.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

The whole time I was there I was thinking of you and the others here who have had gear problems. They say it's the poor quality of gears they get now. All made in Asia. He says they get good batches and bad batches and they were going through a bad batch. They said to call back and try again in a month or two but I don't think I can go through that again. Mine really are pretty good right now and they were free.
Remember when I was PMing you about gears? I was sitting in Randys at that time waiting.

Well, I'm glad they did right by you. Have you considered that some of the NVH could be related to the new driveshaft rather than the gears?
Right now I'm considering a set of Strange Engineering 4.10s. I've heard good things.
I have used Richmond gears without any problems. I take the shims off the pinion and mark the bearing caps and use the same shims on the bearing caps. So far I haven't had any noise or problems.

I considered Richmond but have heard a number of complaints that they are really noisy gears. Untrue???
