Me and my buddy got into it about the Stang and all the cars that could beat it or had better performance numbers. He goes on to list all these BMW's, Benz's, Lexus, Acura's, Vette's, etc. I'm like, those are $50-60,000 cars, and that's the BASE model for most of them. That doesn't even come with any goodies. The 07 is roughly 30K fully loaded. Power for dollar, I say the Stang is the best buy. If I pumped $30K+ into mine, I could easily run with those other cars. The chicks are still going to look at mine more anyway because they all know that real men drive Mustangs, lol. But for real, there isn't a car in the class of the stang that can roll with it. What do yall think?
I agree with you.....and how many of those "Mustang beaters" does he own? And how many Mustangs do you own? Sure there are faster cars out there, but none within reach. Bench racing is pointless. Tell him to buy one of those, and then race you.
And what Lexus and Acura is he talking about? Haven't seen one for sale in this country....
For that matter, Lambos, ferraris, McClarens, they're all faster than my mustang. Dang, I might as well have bought a CIVIC!!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you brought up the price difference. We buy cars that look amazing, and we turn them into speed machines with superchargers, tunes, exhaust, CAI and just have fun with them. Mustangs are for the guys who have passion for cars. How soulless are some of these cars that he listed. They don't even have real names, just numbers. Mercades 300 or whatever they are called is just and example. People get outa the way when they see you coming in the left in thei mirror. Thats just how it works, I think people are just jealous and insult our cars b/c its easy to do so. They just look at HP numbers and not the ability to blow those numbers right out the door with a few mods. What does your friend drive just curious?

He drives an '05 Acura TL that he SWEARS can beat me. But he'll never pull up to the light though. Wonder why? This other guy I work with has an '01 Cobra with a Vortech S/C, but he needs the motor rebuilt. He is thinking about defecting to BMW, which I can understand. Constantly pouring money into your car can be a headache, but he's kinda the same way that the other guy is. "The 335 this makes this much hp at this rpm, and blah blah blah." He's free to do that, but I didn't see why he just didn't pony up the 10K to get the motor built. If I had the funds, I'd take it off his hands.
I did the math and to get the exact stang that I would want, it would cost me approx. 30K, which would bring me to >55K total. That's talking like 500+hp and every bell and whistle you can think of and still cheaper than the BMW's of the world. Oh yeah, my plate would read "M3EATER", lol.
Here is my take, coming from someone who just traded in an Acura TL for my Mustang.
Back in 2005 I test drove 10 cars before deciding on the Acura TL. The Mustang was my close 2nd choice back then. I chose the TL mostly for practical purposes, 4 door sedan, bigger trunk, etc. Without Nav that car came in at about 34,000.00. Pretty reasonable when compared with the 50,000.00 Acura RL, it's big brother.
When Ford came out with the "new retro" body style for the Mustang it caught my eye immediately. While I really liked my Acura TL a lot I kept seeing the newer Mustangs and couldn't get them out of my head. Anyway, as fun as the TL was to drive the Mustang is on a completely different planet. The GT is a serious sports car and not a "luxury sports coupe". I love driving it so much more than driving my Acura. Of course the GT convertible was no drop in the bucket, as the sticker was 36,000.00 but that was with almost 4,000.00 of optional add ons.
My take on some of the other big nameplate cars that I had looked at and/or test driven back in 2005:
1) BMW - Took out a 330i, was nice but most of the lower level Beemers are hardly "ultimate driving machines". To get that from BMW you would have to spend no less than 50,000.00, as you mentioned.
2) Toyota/Lexus - other than the SC and the RX 330 SUV, are these the ugliest looking cars you have ever seen ??? The ES sedan I never even considered for a test drive. It looks like a Toyota Camry in a nicer suit.
3) Honda/Acura - Much more stylish than Infiniti or Lexus but after a couple of years I started to feel like I was driving a glorified. more powerful Honda Accord.
4) Nissan/Infiniti - I drove a 350Z and liked it a lot. But I felt like 20 lbs of onions in a 15lb bag. And once again, to get up to the power and options in my Mustang you are talking upper 40s.
I would have to agree that based on appearance, power, options, etc...you can't touch the Mustang at it's price. After working a deal on my Mustang the purchase price was about 34,500.00 give or take. Nowhere could I even come close to finding a convertible with that kind of power and looks for anything close to that price.
Oh and Willy.....the car I was driving was also a 2005 Acura TL, and he may SWEAR he can beat you, but I have driven both cars and had my Acura for 2½ years....trust me, there is NO WAY the TL could beat this Mustang unless a terrible driver was behind the wheel of the GT.

I suspect that's why he won't pull up to the line. Embarassment doesn't die down quickly here in the office. I'm a terrible driver, but I'd be going in a straight line, how hard can that be?

I'm pretty sure even bench racing you would still beat out the TL. It's not pumping out the HP and torque of the GT AND I'm pretty sure (I'll double check) it weighs more. Tell him to put up or shut up.

THe Mustang is the World's baseline performance car. You are either better or worse and everyone wants to race Mustangs. Its part of being around since 1964 and having all those "Super Stang" Name Plates.. Shelby, Boss... etc.
Some cars are faster, some have more options, some get better gas milage, some are roomier, and some handle better. For each category mentioned there are some that are worse. No car is as balanced in each category as a Mustang for any given year.
Some things are not just about numbers... there is personality and attitude. The Mustangs have plenty and no one else can seem to capture it in the same price class.
GM's F-body was the only thing that ever cam close, and they even managed to screw that up. Sure they added more power and had a better motor, even had better handling, but their price ran them out of the market and see where they are now.

I'm not gonna lie, anytime I travel on the highway, I've at least seen 2 f-bodies broken down along side the road. I would not trust a Camaro/Firebird imho.

Step 1. Put your buddy in your car and drive him to the freeway.
Step 2. Get on it.
Step 3. Reserve a "grudge match" at the local 1/4 mile strip. There is no way he will keep up in that race and that will be the end of it.
After the cruise in your car, he will know he can't beat you.
When the front end comes up and the rear end squashes down, as you accelerate, he will realize his car never does that.
The crowd loves to see two guys who challenged each other, on the street, settle it on the track. Just call a local 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile track and ask when they are open for racing. It's cheap Here, at the Spokane track, it's cheaper to race than to watch!
Your totally correct. Its a lot of car for the money. Sure its not up to the quality of the others but its half as much.
