Ok...now that I have a convertible I notice other convertible owners on the road. I noticed something I never really noticed before. I have seen several people tooling around with the top down but the windows up....

a) is that a common practice ?
b) why would someone do that ?
c) are those people dorks ?
I vote for C ... It does kind of defeat the whole point of a convertible.

In my experiances, I have had verts since 1989, but must say, verts are best driven alone. Many times I have taken people in my older verts with the top down and all I hear are complaints. "Too Hot, Too Cold, Too Windy, I'll mess up my hair, Getting sun burned, I'll get an ear ache, I can't talk, my hat will fly away, I can't see, and it goes on and on and on...." and this is from adults.
Kids, just love it, and no complaints there, only comments of "wow this is cool" and big smiles on their faces.
I have gone out with people and say, oh we can take my car, and response is, as long as you don't put that stupid top down. Yep, you guessed it "Mom, Dad, and family adults". For the exception of my bro-in law, he just loved it and then went out to buy himself a new vert benz when the new model came out in 2000.
So, when you see someone driving with the top down and windows up, and has passangers in the car, it is like a comprise move, just not to hear them just flapping their mouths with complaints.
Good thing to keep hand in the car: sunscreen, and earplugs or cotton for the meek, rope for their hats, and of course a water pistol so when they complain give them a shot. If they keep complaining, tell them they better keep their mouth closed before the eat a bug....

Oh, thanks, but true, and I forget these few, some years back, my gf and I and her mom were going for a ride down to clearwater beach in FL. Now we are driving on regular roads, not the highway. So she gets in the back and as we are driving she ask it I can stop at a dollar store or general Dollar. I said sure. so we go to the first store, 2nd store, and on our way to a 3rd store, I ask, are you looking for something specific. She said ya a hat. OK. So she goes in and comes out with this big rim brown straw mexican looking hat with a flower band, tied down to her chin with a string, and dark big sunglasses. I busted a gut with laughter (inside), reminded me of a Lucielle Ball show. then the window question, could you put the windows up, I can't hear? Now I am getting pissed, but not saying anything, being nice to my gf and her mom. Can you picture how embarassing that is. Then after getting home, I heard, oh it was such a pleasent ride, riding in a convertible . Well, glad someone enjoyed it and i'm glad I found a nice hat.
the whole thing is just too funny and frustrating. "Like my hair will get messed up" so like duhhhh!!!! we r going to an amusement park, not a wedding. Or like they get into the car, and I hear, don't go yet I gotta get ready! (duhhhh get ready for what?) gotta tie up my hair . Like are we in a car or a space shuttle ready for blast off.
or another excuse I heard:
"Oh I felt a drop of rain, better put the top up". (BTW-Not a cloud in the sky), oh no biggie, you must of gotten hit by a bird , just watch out for the seagulls, or timber snakes falling out of trees, then go into you glove box and hand them a small bottle of shampoo, and say cool, I can get a shower, interior wash, without missing a beat.
Lots of fun alone , with passangers

My guess, they do not want to mess up the hair do. I simply can not tolerate driving like that. Go all the way topless or stay at home, is my saying. But to each is their own. Yes, it is rather common. I see more women do than men, but I usually see it on a luxury vert, as opposed to a Stang.
