I posted this on another topic, but I believe that topic may be nearing the end... and I would really like to understand the process...
It took a long time for me to find someone to do my vinyl stripes... he came, did the duals and pins and then the next weekend did the rockers... well, there are 2 areas that bother me and he hasn't answered any of my calls or emails. We agreed he would come back and hook me up - but never did...
Christmas is coming and I am thinking ahead...
Here's my question about painted stripes:
Can you explain what happens when they paint the stripes?
I wouldn't want them raised above the paint (I've seen some bad ones at car shows)... so how do they paint them on so that they are not raised and look great?
And those that have painted stripes - aren't you worried about your paint warranty? 5 years.
Slightly hesitant because of the bad jobs I've seen...
Thanks in advance...
Judi

To do it properly they have to be painted and wet sanded and then the entire panel clear coated several times to eliminate any raised area.
Thank you! - so if I get the stripes bumper to bumper - they have to clear coat just the stripes, not the whole car, right? Sorry - not well informed on paint...

You can just get the stripes cleared but you'll feel the edge if you don't do the entire panel.
Yup... wet sanding will take the actual edge down but then you'll need the clear to protect it. Eventually, after enough sanding, it can feel like glass.

They didn't clearcoat mine and I can tell. There are raised edges on both sides. Not the end of the world though. At least the car came with stripes. I can live with that.
I prefer the painted stripes. I had my stripes on hood painted when I had the hood done, then I had the stripes on the rear end painted afterwards. When you go to get your stripes painted, do get recommendations from other that you like, or other shops. Do ask how the shop intends to paint them. If done wrong, it will look bad. When done right, they look awesome.
as far as warranty goes..if its done by a quality shop they will have a warranty to offer you on what thye paint and as far as the other panels..thye will still be covered under Fords warranty. We use Dupont and offer a 5 year warranty.

Good luck with the stripes Judi... I would like to get mine done in the future as well. I think I might get vinyl first, just to make sure I like them before I paint them.
I am very interested in getting stripes painted on my Vista Blue vert. I want to get dual 10 inch stripes with the little strips running along side of them. But i know it will cost around 2 grand, and i don't know where to get them done. Is this something i can trust to the dealer to do correctly the first time? Will they do all of this wet-sanding and stuff? If i do get it done, i want it done the right way, no half-way doing it.

Thank you so much! That sounds like an excellent warranty you offer.
I honestly dread finding someone around here to do it, frightening thought to me - most of the body shops/paint shops are insurance machines here... so I think I'll go to the car shows and if I see one I love - ask them where they got it done?
Thanks again for the info, help and advice!

Judi check my photos,i have them in different stages of paint. Was there when he took the sandpaper to my perfectly good hood and freaked a bit.A good shop will warrenty their work for lifetime which mine does.I didnt want to skimp on mine and they were a tad over 2K.But i had them painting mirrors and a hood scoop as well, plus installation.I love them painted and wouldnt have vinyl myself.Brent
As everyone has said, make sure you get a great shop, and tell them you want everything sanded and cleared. My dealer was a joke, but I found a body shop that had just finished another stang. The body shop mgr. was busy laying out the stripes on his new stang, and he treated my car like his own. Almost 2 years later, they still look perfect. You can't feel any transition on my stripes.
The only downside is now I notice the orange peel on the factory paint on the panels that weren't painted.

Why would there be orange peel on the unstriped area. Does it have anything to do with the additional layers of clearcoat applied?
