2006 Mustang GT ... Picked up some electric exhaust cutouts
I just got my hands on a couple 2 1/2 inch electric exhaust cutouts for super cheap (never been used). I was just wondering if anybody had any tips or tricks. I've done exhaust work before, but never installed cutouts. Rationally I would think installing them as close to (but after) the cats and probably near a hanger since they will be added weight. I'm going to try and install them this weekend. Pictures to follow when I'm done.

I was going to put those on, but got talked out of them due to heat concerns. I'll be interested to hear what you think of them.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

This will definitly be a learning, and testing experience for myself as well. I've contemplated running a pipe out of the sides just before the rear wheel to get rid of the heat, but it will look a little weird with exhaust tips on the side AND on the rear. These are pretty much just for the noise/fun factor. I know I'm losing back pressure and such which might hurt low end power. They won't be used a whole bunch.

I had thought about this mod at one time, but my exhaust is already really loud. I was going to install them right before the axle to get as little heat as possible. Here's a look at an install back by the axle: QTP - Media

Heat is not an issue... it's not like you'll run them open 24x7. I run mine open at the track 100% of the time. On the street, they are just an occassional thing for a little fun. They are just waaaay to loud to leave open all the time.
Mine are installed on the X-pipe right after the bend. That was about as close as I could get them to the front without running into clearance problems with framerails or the ground. And the switch is discretely placed in the dash.

I'm glad to hear heat isn't really an issue. I wasn't sure if it would be. And as you stated, I will also be using them for just the ocassional setting off of car alarms and showing the local rice what 8 cylinders sounds like.
Those pics are a HUGE help! I was thinking pretty much same area due to space.

Whether the cutoffs are open or not has nothing to do with the heat issue. The issue with the heat is what is passing by the cutoff whether it is open or closed. Heat is hard on the electric motors and shortens the lifespan. It's similar to what happens to a starter selonoid that is too close to an exhaust pipe. I've heard that guys had to have these things removed because they froze up from the heat. That is the reasoning for installing them further back on the exhaust since the exhaust and the pipes have cooled slightly further back. In your case, yours may be installed with the motors rotated toward the downside of the pipe instead of rotated upwards and doesn't get as much radiated heat on the motors.

Well now that I finally looked at your pics, I see that yours aren't QTPs.
That might be why you're not having a problem with heat. The design of yours is different. The QTPs don't come off on a 90 degree pipe but are on a pipe that comes off at a much shallower angle so the motors are closer to the stock part of the exhaust pipe and get heat soaked.
So maybe the heat issue is just with the QTP design.

The stub outs that mine are mounted on is a custom fab... typical Y-pipes wouldn't fit anywhere except way back on the system. I didn't want them back towards the axle. That kind of defeats the purpose IMO.
As far as heat hurting the motors... that seems silly to me. These things are meant to operate with hot exhaust gas flowing right through them. If the QTP (or any other brand) isn't engineered for a hot environment, then I would stay far away from them. Just my 2 cents...
