Thanks for all the info on the axle backs; I think I may go with the Flowmaster American Thunders, but of course, I have a question I hope some one can shed some light on. I came across a pdf installation instruction file for the ATs which was by and large pretty straight forward, except for the fact that in big letters it stated that it was recommended the mufflers be welded on (I gather to the midpipe). This is the first time I've come across this and was wondering if this is particular to the ATs or if this is a general recommendation for all axle backs so that there is no exhaust leak and/or rattling.

Bah. You don't have to weld anything. Just loosen off the band clamps and you're fine.
Important - do not even bother with the clamps that flowmaster ships with the AT's. They are crapola. Just get some u-shaped ones from your local parts store.
Thanks for the info, I talked directly with a Flowmaster sales person and was told that the recommendation to weld the ATs was more of a precaution than anything.
Although if Flowmaster has junk-ass band clamps for the ATs, what does that say about the axle backs themselves?
Don't do Flowmaster American Thunder, I have them on my 94' and hate them....looking for something better. I have Stingers on my 08' GT/CS and love them.....one of the best sounds I have heard.
Everyone's taste is different. I personally think that the SLP Loudmouths with the stock manifolds and H sound the best.
+1 on the SLP LM's also the borla stingers but I think they need an off road H or prochamber to bring them alive. IMO the offroad X pipes sound a tad to "tingy" or "raspy"

I have flowmaster AT's on my car and trust me, they aren't crapy. I think you will really like the sound, especially on the highway. They are louder then the stockers without being to loud. If anything I would say I would like them just a tad louder. PM me if you want more imput.
The FRPP GTA's added just the little extra rumble I was looking for but is not annoying at highway speed. Sounds great at WOT and at idle. Everyone has their on taste and ear but this is a good choice

Go with the Macs you will love that deep muscle car sound. I have had them for a year. I have FRPP X pipe,BBK short tube tuned headers and Mac Mufflers. It sounds bad ass and I always get people with our type of cars asking about my exhaust. I went to the shows and local hangouts and listened to over 30 set ups. I even drove several of my friends and fell into this set up through the 1st year of moding my car. If you want old muscle car sound go with the Macs!
I picked up my first ever Mustang GT convertible 2005 model a few weeks ago. Originaly from Scotland I moved to the States 6 years ago and wanted an American muscle car. I have a friend back in Ohio who is giving me some guidance on upgrades. I have installed the Summit brand (Heartthrobs) axle backs, only $200 and just ordered a CAI from Tunable Inductions. Hood scoop and chin spoiler also on order. I'm also signed up for Mustangs Across America and I will be starting in Vegas, Can't wait!
There is no best sounding exhaust. It's all a matter of opinion. I get compliment on my set-up (magnapacks with a prochamber and magnaflow hi-flow cats). Even stock axlebacks with the an o/r h, o/r prochamber, or with hi-flow cats sound good.
