What is the point of stating "no accidents or tickets" when you are only 16 and have almost no driving history? That's like a groom declaring on his wedding night that he and his wife have never argued during their marriage.

Just my $.02--- I do wonder where some people get all that money to pay for their insurance at those rates. I cannot even think of what it would cost to insure a new driver at 16 years of age with my car. If they are put on their parents insurance, which I assume they are, they are simply one heck of a liability.
A Mustang GT is not a car for a new driver in my opinion. Even if you can afford it, I just think it is too much car for most new drivers. Learn how to drive before you get one-- and it is sure not a car for winter driving unless you never see snow.

Gee, lets see, my first car was a 1965 Ford Galaxie, Red with white top. Wanted a 69 Pontiac Firebird, but couldnt afford the insurance being I was only 18 at the time. Looking back now, the Galaxie was the best choice, I would have probably killed myself or someone else in the Firebird, being a muscle car of that era. Sometimes it takes growing up to understand what growing up is all about.

It's nice that you have the opportunity to have a Mustang GT at your age. Be careful and very respectful of the car and what it can do. These are not cars to be played with unless you trully know its abilities and it takes lots of driving experience to handle them. Many have learned this the hard way.

As I'm sure you've heard before...you must learn to walk before you run.

Be careful out there!!

Your profile says you are from West Bloomfield, MI. I am about thirty minutes away in Dearborn and let me tell you something about my Mustang. I drove in the snow for the first time in my 88 mustang GT 5.0 and it is not fun. I have been driving since I was twelve and full time since I was 15. I am 18 now. I know the call for the new GT as I drove a triple black 5-speed a few months ago. I almost bought one but decided that they have a bit more than 300 horse (Ford sandbags for insurance purposes) and I drove a 2005 GT in the snow and it was horrible. I am unsure of your driving experience but if you are 16, it cant be a whole lot. There are too many things you have not learned yet. If I were you, I would go with a v6. I know people always say that there is no point in getting a v6 mustang but that is if you know how to drive and you have experience. I am only 18 and I wouldnt trust myself in a new GT. The fact is that if you are going to be under your parents for insurance, the liability is too outrageous to risk. If you get in an accident, they will not only go after your assets but your parents. My advice is to wait for the new GT and either get a v6 or an older mustang. I only pay about $80 a month for my 1988 5.0 GT and it is under my name. It is so low because I was on a million dollar policy through Ford. The 5.0 is fun if not funner than the new GT. They cost less and with a few bucks you can make them faster than the new GT. I beat an 06 GT. I have a shift kit, h pipe, 4.10 gear, and a few other things and I wouldnt trade it for a new GT.
Bottom line, it is not worth the risk to you (winter in MI), cost (to you and the parents), and the fact that you dont have the experience needed to handle 300 horse.

By the way, my dad has been teaching me to drive since I was young in areas of winter and sport driving. He went to winter, police and stunt driving schools. Even with my roughly 6 years of driving like this, it is still difficult to drive in the snow, and more so in a extremely powerful car.

In the end you will know what is best, it just depends on whether or not you follow the best route. I have had too many friends killed driving like idiots and I would hate to hear of another death. I live close enough to you that it would be on my news station. Whatever you do, be careful!

Its funny most of the 2005 -2007 mustangs I repair are owned by people over 25. I dont think its your age its how you drive.

I understand what your saying
And for right now i have already put out feelers for an older mustang.
But i really don't feel too inexpierienced to drive in the winter. i've been taught about driving since i was old enough to reach the petals and i've driven a stick in the winter and know the problems i would normally face especially in these crazy michigan storms and crappy roads.
I think i will go for an older model. especially right now at least until i am 17 because during the winter i would be messing up a brand new car with the snow and salt. but come spring (around may, my birthday)i hope to trade up to the new GT. Does anyone think this might be a good middle ground?
Its not really that im looking for the power
The big thing for me is that front end that i've always enjoyed.
I do understand and appreciated the respect and responsability that is due to and car especially an American muscle car.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Some of the older mustangs are worse in the winter than the 05+ due to the front/rear weight ratio. My advice would be snow tires!

Ouch - I'm glad I'm not quite as young as I use to be. I'm almost 27 - Female, excellent driving record, own a 2005 V6 and my insurance is $1000 a year. My hubby is almost 37 and just bought a 05 GT - has a spotless record and his is $1000 also. I actually figured that his would have been more for the GT, but he IS older than I am. lol

I would say that is a good middle ground. Be careful though, the older mustangs are still hard to drive in the snow. Other than that, I would say congrats on handling that like a mature person, not like so many other cocky young kids.

I've been a licensed driver for 40 years and I still don't want to drive a high powered Mustang in the snow! I've never driven one of the new ones, but can say from experience that the fox bodies are a real handful in slippery conditions.

If you do get the car, I hope you drive it with respect. When I was in high school a friend got a new GTX and wrapped it around a tree in about a week. He's lucky he wasn't killed. 99% of the time a young, inexperienced driver and a high powered car = trouble.

It is interesting some kids when they learn to tell time - just have to have a Rolex.

I think these threads bring out such a snarky response most of the time. It's almost funny how predictable it is. Let the kid drive a real American car while he still can.
