Ok all. For those of you that have recently installed the Hurst short throw, you will notice a very annoying vibration sound from the shifter handle. After reading a few forums with sujections, I finally have a $2 resolution.
1.) Go to your local hardware emporium and purchase 6 neoprene 1/16 washers. (These things will be very big, so you will need to trim them down a bit.)
2.) remove the schome shifter arm and place 1 trimmed down washer on each hex bolt in between the handle and shifter, and tighten it back down. ( This will eliminate the high pitch vibration)
3.) Remove the rear bushing bracket on the shifter and place 2 trimmed washers on each mounting bolt (one washer didn't seem to do it. You may find and try a thicker washer) and re-tighten them down.
This worked like a dream for me. I hope this helps.

BTW, I realized just now that I cannot type. I guess I should proof read my quotes before posting. Anyway, the size washers that you need to get are 5/16 not 1/16. Sorry.

Someone posted a short while ago saying that if you replace the rear bushing of the Hurst shifter with the OEM one from the stock shifter that it will kill that annoying buzz.
Unfortunately for me i've been far too lazy as of yet to bother with trying it.

That would be me. The OEM rear bushing is larger and made of a softer rubber. Completely killed the vibe in mine. Not sure I agree with the rubber washer technique. The shifter arm and the shifter base are both groved and are designed to be bound together. By placing the washer in there you effectively give up the mechanical bond that those groves provide and are now 100% reliant on the 2 button head bolts that hold it together. Takes only a few minutes more to drop the rear of the shifter and replace the rear bushing with the OEM. Everyone obviously has their own preferences tho!

id have to agree with chopperman about the bond between the two pieces. however i did try the rear bushing replacement and found that the noise is still there. ive pretty much come to terms with the fact that i own a rattle trap. whether its the trans or some other part of the car it makes noise.

If you put a bit of pressure on the shifter arm while the vibration is occuring does it stop? If so, it could still be "shifter" related. The only vibe I have now is really 4th gear, seems to start around 1700 rpm and goes thru about 2000 rpm. I'm hoping some kind of TSB comes out shortly, there was something in the group a while back about them looking in to it in Florida.

Sorry for just now replying. I did not mention that I tried the rear bushing replacement prior to the washer idea and it did not work either. The nice thing though is that the neoprene washers are so thin that they actually get pinched in the grooves. True, that this puts more pressure on the bolts, but those bolts are so thick, that you would have to put some serious force to break them or do any damage to the shifter or shifting assemply.

yes chopperman it does stop if i hold the shifter while its doing it. maybe ill try the washer thing. has anybody tried to replace the front bushing from the shifter to the trans with the stocker and did it do anything?

I would be more tempted to use "liquid electrical tape" or even the "plastic tool dip" than the washers. You can get the stuff at Home Depot, Lowes, etc for about 3-4$ a can. You could paint it on the 2 mating surfaces then while still wet torque it back down. You'll get the best of both worlds, will still have the grooves fully meshed as well as fill any voids that may be causing the vibration. If you go the washer route, in adition to the grooves not "fully" meshing as designed you may get more "flex" (for lack of a better term) in the shifter. The holes on the chrome upper arm are much larger than the bolts that go thru them. With the washers if those bolts even slightly loosened or are not ridiculously tight the upper arm would have slop since the grooves are not fully meshed.
I'm thinking I might just do this myself this weekend! Never know, might help with that nasty 4th gear crap I got going on!

i see what your sayin the washers or whatever have a vibration dampening effect. i may try that. as for the nasty fourth gear crap? well thats gonna take a miracle or a blanket of some kind to muffle the damn thing.

I used 2 o-rings in the same way, just squashed them in there after they around the bolts.I never had vibrations, but heard so much about it i used preventive maintenance, lol.
Yup, sure did, used the tool dip, got it at Ace. I even coated the outside of the Hurst rear bushing. I got no vibe at all. The stock rear bushing while it didn't vibrate was not as firm as the Hurst. Been running it this way for 5-6 months now, not a single issue.

The rubber washer fix was posted by a Hurst rep (Mr Gasket Co) on several forums almost a year ago.
