I just ordered a GT take-off 8.8" rear end with 3.73 gears and T-lock installed from newtakeoff.com. I was also on the fence about 3.73 vs 4.10. In the end I decided to go with 3.73. My eventual plans are to put a supercharger (X-charger) on my car next year...so I figured the T-lock and gears were a step in the right direction. I was afraid that I would regret the 4.10 setup after the supercharger was installed (especially since the stang is my daily driver and it sees a lot of highway time). I will let you know how the 3.73s work out next week after it is installed. Did you check the price for a take-off with the gears you want. With labor and parts it was only $200 different for me to get the 8.8" gt rear end with gears, T-lock and V-6 pinion flange already installed. Just a thought.

Are you installing it yourself?

I am having a local peformance shop install the 8.8" rear end. Labor is close to $300. It was close to $500 labor (not counting parts) for the shop to do a gear setup and T-lock install on the stock 7.5" rear so I chose to pay a little extra and swap out. I hear that the T-lock rebuild kit is less expensive for the 8.8" if needed in the future also. The only problem I am having is deciding what to do with the stock 7.5" rear end. If my wife sees one more mustang car part laying around the garage she might snap...and a rear axle is not very discreet!
I'll let you know how the install goes.

well i used the gear calculator found in another gear thread and its sweet. turns out if i put a 4.10 in then in 5th gear there will be about 400rpm increase. i noticed the drop in rpm from 4th to 5th is about 400 or 500rpm. so a 4.10 would be like eliminating 5th. the specs are different for auto trans with greater rpm increase.

estimates for manual trans

gear mph rpm 5th gear
3.31 80 2400
3.73 80 2600
4.10 80 2800

It's also affected by your tire height.

So what kind of mpg drop are we talking here? That's the only thing I'm worried about. If I just lost a couple here and there it'd definitely be worth it.

Question 4:10 Gears

So i just ordered some of the 4:10 gears from Americanmuscle.com and labor costs are gonna be about 300$ which isnt to bad. But my transmission is slipping if i put those on is it going to cause more problems? also what kind of difference will i see in 1/4 with the 4:10s cause the car is going to be for drag and nothing else.
