Unhappy 2005 Mustang v6 gas tank issue. Help please!!

I have a 2005 mustang that has been having gas tank filling problems. The problem is it doesn't! It takes about 15-20 min. to fill and the pump shuts off the whole time. I brought it to the dealer and they "found nothing wrong." They told me my car was built after the cars addressed in the TSB. I called Ford and they contacted the dealer and told me "nothing is wrong." Then they blamed all the gas pumps and said I should try another station, as if I haven't done that already. Apparently all the gas pumps in NY are defective. I guess I'm supposed to go to Vermont before work for gas. I then wrote an e-mail to ford and someone took my "case" and "researched" it and again blamed the pumps and refused to do ANYTHING to help me. Then said "have a nice night." I really want to purchase another Mustang but as of right now I really don't want to purchase another Ford because of how they've treated me. Any suggestions. I really love the car, but I don't like standing out in the cold for 20 minutes filling it up, and I don't like being blown off by Ford. I don't think I should have to pay a dime to fix this problem! Pleeease can anyone besides a lawyer help me??

Hello Erin, and welcome to AFM.

Unfortunately filling the tank on the S197 can be like feeding peas and carrots to a kid.

The pumps in my area only have splash gaurds and I rarely have any problem filling the tank. If I travel to Dallas where they have vapor recovery systems on the pumps I have a lot of trouble refilling and have to turn the nozzle upside down.

Post an update if you try the fix posted by stlwagon.

Sometimes, yes. But not always.

thanks for the info. Unfortunately I have not yet found a station where this doesn't happen, and I've been to many stations. Thanks for responding though!

It most definitley can be a pain in the a$$, but holding it upside down, kinda helps......sometimes.

I too would love an actual fix that would, once and for all, correct the error!

I wrote this up on this forum some weeks ago and got no real answer. The problem is not confined to mustangs because my father has the same problem with his lincoln.

Try filling up BEFORE you have driven the car for more than a few minutes that day. Whenever I do that, I have no problem. As a result, I think the problem is heat from the exhuast warming the gas tank and building up too much pressure making filling up very slow. I bought some heat shielding and will install shortly and let you know what happens. You may have noticed that the car comes with heat shielding on the gas tank. It probably is insufficient. The exhaust pipe goes very close to the tank.

Try another Dealer. My son and I both have 05's. My dealer said nothing was wrong with it when they tried filling it and the dealer my son bought his from just ordered the tank over the phone...
