Is this normal for the auto trans?

Off the line my car accelerates smoothly but if I'm crusing and then hit the gas sharply it'll often hesitate for a second or two while it picks through the gears and then resume. Can that be corrected by messing with the shift points or something?

yep... sounds right for the stock tune.... shifting is greatly improved with an aftermarket tune...

Mine did that and it turned out to be the Fuel pump. There is an thread on that and a TSB for it!

Well I installed a Hypertech Max Energy that I got bundled with the car. I didn't change the shift points but I selected to firm shifting (not all that firm if you ask me).

That for hesitation after a long cruise... i assumed the OP was talking about just cruising... not necessarily after a long time...

Not familiar with that tuner... I spent a day with Lidio at Alternative Auto to build a complete custom tune to get my automatic tranny dialed in... was simply amazing the difference in the shifting!

Hmm. This mostly happens in low speed city driving so it's probably not the pump but I'd still like to look over that thread.

totally normal for the Stock tune , easily corrected with a tuner (diablosport predator is good, personally I prefer the xcal3)

Been giving some thought to the way it feels, I think it's when I'm cruising in 2nd and I hit the gas it shifts to 3rd and then to 4th successively before the power will hook up again. So I guess my tuning strategy should be to try and space those 2 shifts points out, either by raising the 4th, lowering the 3rd, or some combination. My Thunderbird never did this, probably because the 4th shift was up in the stratosphere and I almost never got to it. I'll play with my Hypertech this week to see what I can do with it. yes, the automatic is definitely upshift happy at part throttle...

i think that ford made the V6 upshift happy so it got better fuel efficiency.

That's exactly why they did it... when i asked my buddy who's an engineer at Ford about the car being upshift happy, his reply was "Do you know how much time we spend trying to maximize the MPG?" I'm like "Wait a minute... it's a MUSTANG! I didn't buy it for the gas mileage" LOL

I figure for a start I'll adjust the 3-4 shift point up 300 RPM. Should get me close to the results I'm looking for and the impact on gas mileage should be negligable. I'll post my results for the next guy.

tune it fo sho, get that tune fo sho haha theres also an accelerator pedal mod where you go in and bend the brass fingers that touch the responding board(which tell your computer to get up and go) ill look for the thread but it seemed like a very tricky mod...you need jewlers pliers n stuff cuz the fingers are real small and brittle

Well pushing the 3-4 shift up 300 RPM was a definate improvement. It's still tripping up a little but I'll live with it a day or two and plan my next move.
