Question All Horsepower Upgrades To 2006 Mustang V6?

Hi guys, i recently purcahse a 2006 white v6 with the pony package and i am already lusting for more power. I am actually quite new to pretty much all after market up grades so i was wondering your reccomendations on several fronts. The first cold air intakes? Any recommendations on best or most HP upgrade? Tuners? best HP or most user friendly reccomendations? Throttle Bodies? Most HP? Pulley replacements? most HP or typical instal costs? Exhaust? most HP or best (Throatiest/loudest) Sound? Any help or recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated i am eager to learn everything i can about my car and how to get the most from it!
Thank you

Here's a list of some of the things you can do. Some of them give a bigger bang for your buck than others, but you should start with #1 and then do #2. The rest aren't in any order.

1. Tuner, Cold Air Intake, custom tune combo kit. (This item will give you the biggest bang for your buck and the most noticable diff for the least amount of money) 15-20hp $400-$600. The tune is an absolute must.

2. Exhaust-Single axleback or true duals (Replacing the restrictive stock single muffler will get you 5-7hp for $70-$200. True duals will see a little more improvement but mainly give you better sound and looks-add another $300-$600 for true duals)

3. Headers-Long or shorttube you'll see some gain with these but they're mainly for preperation to go forced injection (Turbo or Supercharged).

4. Heads and cams- Super Six Motorsports will give you 20-50hp and 50-80lbs torque for $2000-$3000 plus install.

5. Superchargers or turbo- These give you the real power but you really dig deep into your wallet to pay for it too. 80-160hp $4000-$6000.

6. Underdrive pulleys- I think they give you 10-15hp $200-$400 plus install (If you have future plans to supercharge your vehicle, you'll have to remove it later)

7. Throttle body spacers- don't waste your money on it. It's worthless on these engines.

8. Gearsets for the rear diff- $150-$300 plus install. Your vehicle comes with 3.31 gears in the rear end. If you change to 3.73 (or go way up to 4.10) you won't gain any power but you'll get more torque to the rear wheels cause you'll be geared lower.

To find out what everyone recommends, do searches on the forums. Pretty much no matter what your looking for, someone here has it or has tried it.

You can have a 440hp V6. It's just a matter of how much money your willing to spend to get there and you can see that it's easy to rapidly reach the point where it would be cheaper to drop in a v8 crate engine or get a GT. Most folks go with 1 and 2 right away and then when they're ready for major power, throw in a supercharger.

Since this is my daily driver I didn't want to go over the top, just wanted a little more horsepower. First thing I did was change out the restrictive stock exhaust system for a dual cat-back exhaust with 2 chamber Magna-flow mufflers; all of a sudden the sleeping pony woke up and the throttle became much more responsive.

Next step was ram air with a shaker hood installation; the car is definitely faster than any stock v6 I've come up against, and although I can't beat a v8 I think they do get a bit of surprise when I put my foot into it.

Next up, if I can find it, will be an upgrade (replacement) throttle body for some additional horses. Thought I found one from Moss Mustang but turned out it had been recalled. If anyone has a recommendation please write.

Stock throttle body is actually fine unless you go F/I... and then the gains are really minimal...

Some people have reported problems with the BBK...

Default Awesome

This topic is excellent!!! I was actually gonna start an almost identical topic, well if you guys could, can you post some links to the products in question? I know I am currently in the market for a Cold air intake with tuner and would love it if you guys posted the ones you recommend.

Wow, that really got my attention What would you need to do that? And how much do you think it would cost? I am considering putting in a Shelby/Paxton Supercharger, true dual exhaust and headers, and maybe a shaker hood (will that work with a supercharger???) Obviously this will not all be at one time, I don't have that kind of money, but over a year or two I would like to. Any help would be great. Thanks, Jacob

dont waste your time and money trying all small steps, you wont be satisfied. Go big or go home..lol
Get an Xcharger Kit and a single GT takeoff muffler. Bam done...You will be able to maintain the sleeper look, run with the big boys and still get good MPG.
explorerexpress.com.

just a thought..

I think all tuners are vehicle specific,,,tuned to the code on the computer in your car. To go to another vehicle it,the tuner ,needs to be erased and re formatted to the GT tuner. The programs are not interchangeable

The tuners are unique to the individual car that it is loaded onto. Also, you can store up to 3 different tunes on your tuner. So for example you can have a street tune, a race or and something inbetween if you like.

You CAN have a shakker hood scoop in addition to a supercharger, its just particular which type of supercharger. If you get a positive displacement supercharger that bolts onto the top of the intake manifold, you can't use the shakker. But if you get the centrifugal S/C you can have the best of both worlds. Exterior looks and raw power under the hood.

IMO go with the S/C. You can spend $5,000 very quickly and not yield even 1/2 the results that the 1 single mod of a S/C will give you. Also ditch the stock V6 muffler for anything else, GT take-off or Aftermarket.

If you don't want to go Forced induction. I would say go with a CAI and tune (i recommend C&L intake and SCT 3x tuner), UDP's, CMDC delete plates, maybe some cams (but they are pricey, but they sounds awesome!!!), and then maybe a full exhaust system as well.

or, you could save you money and buy:
4.6L V8 crate engine: $6700.00 new/ $2200.00 used (pulled from a donor car)
TKO600 transmission kit (clutch, Drive-shaft, shifter, bell-housing, trany): $4400.00
GT rear-end from ford performance: $1465.00
2007 GT computer with wires: $1000.00 new or used, ask ford dealership.
Cooling: $200.00
SLP loudmouth exhaust: $375.00

done for an amazingly low price of: $14,140.00 for all new parts.
plus, with a stock RWHP of 290 you can tune all you want and make well over 500RWHP.
as with a V6, 400hp is pushing it... and thats the maximum hp.

thats what im doing, swaping engines.

unless you guys can tell me that a V6 engine is better than a V8, and that i could get 500 hp from a V6... then maybe.

but for safety and drivability i would go for a V8 with one turbo. there is also a lot more room to work with.

yeah you could do a lot of things,,,but I thought the question was for getting the most out of the V6.Something one could realistically do in their garage,on a budget. You do all that stuff converting to a v8 and all you have is a worthless P.O.S. when your done. all the mods to the engine can be re-done down the road if you ever considered selling(sell a Mustang???)but once you hack it up like that,,,plan on keeping it.
