Last Friday, my wife took our V-6 to the local FORD dealer, for an oil change. While there, they came to her, and said that the air filter was dirty. (They even showed it to her, and it was dirty.)
So, they ask her if she wanted them to replace it with a new one. She told them yes, and about 3 minutes later, she said that she had the feeling that she had been had.
The cost of a MotorCraft air filter was $27.60, plus tax. The part # was FA1773. I had priced a FRAM at Auto Zone just a couple of days before, and they were $8.99 I realize that it was a MOTORCRAFT filter, but, ......
I was oing to go to a CAI, but I think we "might" buy a 2009, or a 2010 when/if they change the body style, and even more, go to a GT.
Just wanted some input,
Thanx
P.S. For a stock air filter, what do you all use ??

i am running a stock replacement K&N filter. that ran me bout $50. but i bought it 3 years ago. and you figure $9 a paper filter with 4 changes a year it pays for it self after the first year and half and is good for 10 if you take care of it. the dealers generally are over priced.
mustang v6, s&b intake, with painted cover flowmaster, 16x7 in front 17x9 in back, with 2 inch drop in the front, costume paint on rims, black grill, with gt fog lights with angel lights, and running mustang, smoked headlights, with headlight splitters, smoked out turning lights, racing stripes, blackout trunk kit, all new audio system, 4 jl audio 5x7 speakers front and back 2 jl 12 inch w6v2 with 2 jl 500/1 amps and pa system 1967 mustang working on

Dudes, there's more than K&N to extend air filter life if you're still running with a stock tune.
Doesn't anyone use compressed air to blow out a paper filter and extend its life? I have 34,000 miles on my car and replaced the OE filter at 25,000.
If the OE filter isnt wet, or packed full of crap, or damaged . . . just blow it out every other oil change.
Of course you dont get the K&N sticker of you blow the OE filter clean. And who is going to keep their car for 1,000,000 miles?
I had an ex g/f who's step-dad was real into the longevity of honda motors , anyways he gave my ex g/f his honda odyssey which had 740,000 miles on it.....bleh, so who knows maybe someone will keep their mustang that long

Never blow out an airfilter you will cause tiny holes in the paper. As air and dirt pass through these holes they will get larger. You will not take long to dirt wash the engine causing ring and/or valve failure. Trust me it is not worth the 7.99 - 9.99 you save. I see this alot if you want to do anything just tap the filter on a soild surface to knock loose any dirt or debris. NEVER EVER USE COMPRESSED AIR!!

And no I do not sell filters for a living.
Obviously the use high pressure air is not good to use and I should have clarified that in my post. But regulated air around 20 psi is fine to use. I've never had a problem with damage from low pressure air and if you detect damage you replace the filter. Hopefully this eases some concerns.
K&N filters on the other hand can be damaged as they are made of gauze. Granted, the gauze is sandwiched between wire mesh but I have seen people use unregulated air to blow them dry as well as smacking them hard on a surface to get excess moisture out after washing them to can cut down the drying process before they re-oil and reinstalled the filter.
What I'm trying to emphasize is that paper filter life can be extended with careful cleaning. But yes, you do make a valid point that they can be damaged from excess air pressure.
I'll stick with my K&N thanks. Ive had several cars I put K&Ns into, never had a prob. Just clean 'em the correct way, they last the lifetime of the car..JMO! If theres another opinion you like better, go with it..
