Might want to put a dab of loctite on the threads when you screw in the new one. Antennaes do vibrate a lot in the wind and you don't want it coming loose.

2005 V6Mustang coupe. Automatic. Black with Charcoal Interior
Mods: JLT CAI, Bamachips 91 race tune, single Mustang V8 muffler, Mustang V8 swaybars
Looks: smoke front turn signals, sequential taillights, 14" shorty antenna, MRT rear window louvers and a little chrome for the interior 2000 C5 Corvette convertible, Torch Red with Black Interior. Full of options, Corsa exhaust 1990 Ford Bronco 351ci engine- it runs.
You might want to search the forums for the tutorial, I know some guys were cutting their stock antennas.
They popped the little ball off the end of it, saved it, then cut the antenna to length with a pair of dikes, sanded the cut end to make it smooth and then glued the little ball back on and finished with a coat of flat black paint.
Sounds like a pretty fun/cheap mod.
EDIT: Just thinking about what I wrote and realizing a certain word I used that might offend people. Sorry, its an electrician thing. Just stop for a second and imagine if we started calling our wire cutters our "alternate life choices."

If you live in the city you shouldn't be affected much. Out here in the more rural areas,however, reception is noticably compromised.

I live in Harrisburg and reception is poor. To Black05Pony's point if you cut your stock antenna even with your roof line reception shouldn't be affected.
