I'm getting massive brake dust on my back wheels and my pads are already worn out. My front pads have plenty of meat left. Just ordered new pads. Is there some kind of adjustment to fix this or is this normal?
Has anybody had this problem before?
i'll let you know if my brakes make it past 30,000 miles. with all of the 25 MPH to 35MPH driving that i do, up and down hills, i am on my brakes all the time. but its cheaper than getting a ticket for COASTING
but i thought brakes shouldn't wear out until about 50k
i have gone through two sets of brake rotors in the past 6 months which means my brakes pads were gone too, im on cross drilled instead of OEM rotors now and the fronts are finally doing well but the backs look heat worn or cracked again im starting to hear that dreadful squeak in the back.... these cross drilled have only been on for 2,000 miles

Are you a frequent burn out driver? haha

About two weeks ago, the rear driver's side of my '05 was making a bit of noise when applying the brake. I took the calipers off to check the pads, and to my surprise all four sets of pads look almost new. I've never had a set of brake pads last over 30 or 40 thousand, and I've got 52k on this one. Never did find the cause of the noise, but it stopped after I checked it out. Dust, I suppose, or else whatever it was fell out.
I was under the impression that the back brakes should last at least 3 times as long as the front brakes. Every other car I've ever owned never needed back brake pads. They just never seemed to wear out. Now, on my '06, the rear pads have worn significantly faster than the front. I don't know if my driving style is any different with this car than any other.
I'm just thinking rear brakes hould last longer than front.
In my experience the fronts will wear out first. For me it's been 2:1 wear rate (when the fronts are gone the rear still has half). Note that the front rotors are usually bigger. I wonder if something's up w/ the master cyl or proportioning valve (we still have those, right?).
Standard rule of thumb is 60:40 for front/rear braking ratio.

I wish I caught this before the warrenty expired.
Now, I'm going to have to look into this.
If there is a proportioning valve, that is the problem. I'll look in my tech manual when I have time.
Pads have a 12,000 limited warranty. Beyond that they are not covered under warranty unless they are worn as a result of another warranted component under the bumber to bumber.
It would have been a challenge, mercfocus, to cover the pads or rotors even if you were under the bumber to bumber.

i agree. most cars will go through the front pads much quicker than the rear.....but, to get 39k miles out of a set of pads, front or rear is excellent in my book...some people see only 10k miles in some cars before the pads need replacing.
i wonder if the parking brake mechanism might be binding somewhat, causing extra wear on the rear pads...i doubt this though....since you got the 39k on the original. that is something to be proud of.

06 sts6 needed the extra two doors, otherwise an 06 v6 mustang was my first choice.
It could be traction control if you have it equipped.
While the front brakes do take more abuse from stopping than the rear, with traction control, when one rear wheel begins to slip, it pulses the brakes to that wheel in order to route power to the other wheel which may have better traction (without this or a limited slip, the wheel that loses traction would just start spinning and the wheel with traction would get reduced power).
In San Diego, I doubt you have much snow, but that would be the primary cause (my brakes are 8 months old and have some good use on them from a nasty winter and nothing but hills), but anything (water, dirt, sand, gravel, etc.) that can cause a wheel to start slipping (even if you don't notice it) when you're accelerating will get braked by the TCS.
If the brake dust only recently started building up quickly (with no changes to driving style or environment), then TCS probably isn't the culprit.
Like someone else said, it could be the parking brake not disconnecting fully. If you're equipped, jack up the car from the four corners with the parking brake on, then, once it is off the ground, release it and try to spin the rear wheels. If they don't spin fairly freely, then there's your culprit!
