Default A question about Dual Exhaust and Computer Tune

"V6 Mustang Stuff" has a great deal on dual exhaust kits using an X pipe and dual midpipes. But before I buy I wanted to know if I'll be required to reprogram the engine computer to allow for the reduced back pressure. My car is factory stock right now. Also, I've heard that installing a set of true duals like these and a CAI will actually cause a decrease in fuel economy. Is there any truth to that?

You don't need a retune. It's not going to affect the a/f enough to where the PCM can't adjust for it.

So, how about the gas mileage? It doesn't make sense to me that economy would suffer, unless I can't keep my foot out of it, but I've heard it said that it will from a lot of guys. I do a lot of long distance driving and with gas heading towards $5.00 a gallon I want to squeeze as much as I can from each gallon.

Going duals got me 1-2 MPG better from the start.

This year (getting ready for its 100,000 mile tune up) I'm averaging 28.X MPG on my 180 mile daily commute.

And I don't exactly set the cruise control at 65, if you know what I mean...

Last year I was getting 29-30 MPG at 70-85 MPH.

Time for a tune up...

But you are correct that it will be harder to keep your foot out of it.

Dual exhaust is cool for the sound but does not do anything as far as performance (HP) goes.

Question Hp gains from dual exhaust

DevilNBluDress I may be wrong, but I believe there are very modest HP increases by installing dual exhaust, especially when combined with CAI and or a wider throttle-body. Certainly nothing approaching the increases from a Vortech super-charger
Would love to be alble to afford that. They have an 08 V6 with a super-charger at the Steeda Factory in Pompano Beach FL. I like to go there and drool every now and then! Awesome place only 25 miles from my house.

any time you can allow your motor to breathe and exhale more efficiently you'll get no worse gas milage. the reason people see worse milage is the fact that they like the new/better sounds so much that they can't keep their foot out of the throttle and therefore use more gas as they're accelerating harder, and going faster just to hear the car and see what it can do now.

Amen!

Of course I can still knock down 28MPG at 65-85... at 95,000 miles without a tune-up...
