Default Automatic in 2007 Mustang... Reliability ...

I was at a transmission shop today and was talking to the owner there, and I mentioned I bought a 2007 Mustang with the 5 speed Automatic. Well.. he was a wealth of gloom and doom to say the least. He said it is not reliable and has a lot of problems with the electronics and other areas. He also said that the trans fluid should be changed before fifty thousand miles and not to go with the Ford recommendation.... He said the fluid for this transmission is very expensive and you can only get it from a Ford Dealer, and they soak you big time, according to him.

Can someone who has some miles on this transmisson give me some input. I am wondering if the reliability would be greater in a V6 than in a GT with a V8?

I kind of thought of doing the filter change and fluid at around twenty five thousand miles to keep things fresh. I had used a transmission additive by BG in my Ford Ranger but now I am concerned it would not be a good idea to use it in this transmission. I also thought that if I program the shifts to be a bit firmer, it would be better for the transmission. Chevrolets are better with a firmer shift and it adds to the life of the trans, I now am not sure if that logic holds true with the Ford Five Speed Automatic... ?

Any thoughts on this would be a big help to me in planning out how to maintain the car.

Hmmmm... I now wonder if I would have been much better off with a Five Speed Manual.. Oh well.. too late to change that now... LOL

thanks for any information anyone can provide....

my auto died at 38,000-39,000 miles but i think i might have been the first ever to have this problem at such an early mileage.

Hey Xchris...

The mechanic said that these transissions seem to act up at around 38,000 to 39,000 miles... so what you experienced may not be as unique as you think. Sorry to hear you had that problem, and hopefully anyone with a lot of transmisson tech knowledge will offer some solutions to help extend the transmission life...

Thanks again for your input... it is appreciated.
Dave

i have heard good things about the 5R55S trans in our cars. Its pretty beefy and have seen it handle a ton of miles before. I was under the impression that firmer shifts would create more heat and thusly lessen the life of the car....
