Guys - I can't get better than 12-14 in the city with my V6. Maybe it's the AC I'm using b/c it's hot as hell in VA. I do drive kind of punchy but still people here are saying they're getting 18-20 in the city. I get better on the highway but it's still kind of low (22) i hear others getting 28. I use 87 but seriously what am I doing wrong here? Again, the only thing I can think of is the AC as I use it a ton right now.
do you do alot of stop and go,(red Lights) and alot of stop and go intrafic, because will make alot of diffrence on your milge. my mustang gets 22-24 around town and 30 t0 31 on the high way and it is 3.8 5-speed.
Granted I live in rural/ suburban Virginia, but I average almost 24 in my GT, even with the A/C running. Are you doing a lot of idling? That sounds kind of low for a V6.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.
we're talking serious stop and go - I'm right outside dc (ballston/clarendon area) so I am always at red lights. Still - is that typical even for red light driving? I'm doing a lot of 1st gear 2nd gear driving during this time
Our cars burn a ton of gas standing still. Although your mileage still seems kind of low, if you're in stop and go traffic all the time I would expect pretty crappy mileage.

In constant stop and go traffic, any vehicle will get lousy mileage. A Toyota Prius probably wouldn't get over 20 in that kind of traffic. You just look better getting lousy mileage in the Mustang.

I live in Atlanta, and if you're not getting much crusing space you won't get good mileage. When I first got my stang and i was learning stick and drivng very punchy I was getting below 10mpg.
Now i get 18 - 20, and I don't do as much heavy traffic driving since its summer , and i get above 30 on road trips!

Everyone is pretty much right on with stop and go mileage. You may also want to check your tire pressure too. Keep about 4-5psi under the max tire rated pressure for max mileage.
When you're actually moving.

Actually that's where a Prius gets it's best mileage since it can run on electric only for a while in stop and go, I just rented one for a business trip got 53 mpg in mixed driving.
But for our cars like all other gas engines depends on how much stop and go in city. I'm in NY and every car I had have never got the EPA city MPG but I have no problem getting the EPA highway MPG. Local stop and go I've been getting 14-16 mpg but I don't baby it.

I've always wondered whatever happened to the Honda CRX engine? Had a CRX HF and got 55mpg in that car and it was carbed. An injected version of that vehicle would have gotten over 60. Why is everyone fooling with the expensive hybrids when the technology for super efficient gas engines existed clear back in the 80's? Manufacturers today are bragging about vehicles that only get 35mpg. Go figure.

You are right the cars of the 80's got better gas mileage than now, but they were less HP and weight.
The CRX was great but it was only a 2 seater and under 2000 pounds-all the new safety equipment and crash ratings make heavier cars, plus the old CRX was probably less that 100 HP. Most Hyundai's are pushing 3000 pounds now.
HP sells, all the economy gains in the last 20 years have been a tradeoff to HP and weight.

if i am hitting heavy NJ traffic in my GGT, my mileage will go as low as 14 MPG. But i do try and get on this local road that is a straight 3 miles of 50 MPH but it has about 5 lights on it so i need to stop, then go back up to 50, then stop again. But my advice is to find 30 MPH and hit the cruise control button. Using the button over your foot will give you better mileage since the computer can make finer adjustments as compared to you.

man that seems low but i use to get like 18-19 but them for some reason I decided to change my spark plugs from the platnums to the iridium one and now I'm getting 20 in the city and like 25- 30 highway and that's with a cai and a tune.

I have a stock V6 Pony and in the city I get like 14 MPG, the avg speed is like 20mph. SO I'd say you are normal. When I drove to Houston, TX 3 weeks ago, I got 26.5 MPG with avg speed of 75 mpg.

You know I was wondering about my milage too. I don't have far to go to get to work. Only about 18 miles round trip. But there are times when I have to take the car out of town and I noticed I'm only getting around 23 mpg highway. I have a 2006 with 5 spd stick. The car's drivetrain is stock.
Now I know most everybody on this site is going the high performance route, but I'm going to try and squeeze as much milage of of my car as I can. I'm going to install a low restriction exhaust and a free flow intake, like a CAI system. In the old days that was usually enough to extend your fuel range, but with todays computer controlled engines you'll need to reprogram the performance curve. And here's where I'm a novice. Can anyone suggest a tune program that will help increase the fuel economy?
