Default 2005 Mustang V6 high idle in neutral?

Hello...I have a 2005 Mustang V6 manual transmission, and if I put the car in neutral to brake, my spedometer goes down accordingly but my tachometer rises to 2000 or sometimes 2500. I have had my car into three differeny dealerships and they tell me it is a "normal characteristic" of my vehicle! I don't believe this because I've owned the car for a year and it just started three and a half months ago and it doesn't do it every time. Sometimes it idles where it is supposed to. During this ordeal, my car went into "limp home" mode and my electronic throttle control was replaced, but has not helped the problem. Anyone with some insight? I'm at the end of my rope with this!! Thank you!

No way is that normal, last thing you want is surging idle. Let them show you another s197 Mustang V6 stick that does that.

Could be as simple as a dirty throttle body or your throttle position sensor could be failing.

i've got an auto so i dont know exactly how they'd measure up to each other, but a few months ago i had that problem where it'd idle way too high, except with me it would go up and down and sometimes would cut off on me, turned out to be a throttle body problem, which was recalled. but yea, idling at 2000 is definitely not normal

If the throttle actuator is shot, it'll need a whole new throttle body. If it's just the TPS, that's a $45 part from Ford.

this has happened to me. i also have a v6 stick shift and had one day developed it, same conditions you mentioned, put it in neutral and brake. however, i have an intake and a tune on my car, i mentioned this problem to my tuner doug at bamachips and he wrote me another tune and solved the problem. i dont know if this helps but just to let you know that you were not the only one.

They tell me my TPS is fine. I am still fighting with the dealership this. It's been 3 1/2 months and about 3500 miles. They tried to put me in a new 2008 auto Mustang for about $6.000 over book price because they saw me coming a mile away when I bought this car! I love my car and I just want it fixed. The service mgr told me to leave my car out of neutral and brake in gear to avoid this "phenomenon" from happening. He also told me he has never known anyone who drove a stick like I do. Is it so wrong that I brake in neutral sometimes?? I've done it for 14 yrs and never have had this happen in any other car. I'm supposed to take my car into the dealer tomorrow so the owner can drive it. He told me if it comes back NORMAL, then there's nothing he can do. I told him he will hunt me down another 05 V6 manual and he's going to let me drive it so I can see it with my own two eyes! Ford headquarters in Michigan is siding with the dealer. They won't do a thing. There was talk of bringing in the Zone Service Rep to look at my car, but that has disappeared somehow. Isn't this nuts? My Mustang is one of the things that makes me love life and I want her to run great for a long time, but if I just take the answer that it's normal, what about long term affects on the engine?? Thank you all for reassuring me that I'm not nuts!

I frequently pull out of gear when braking. You're doing nothing wrong.

Ask him if he knows a stick will stall if braking to a stop in gear.

If this dealership is giving you the run-around it might be time to contact Ford and let them know how dissatisfied you are with their maintenance people. That should get the problem resolved quickly.

I've already contacted Ford twice and they are siding with the daeler that the car is performing within Ford mechanical guidelines. The owner of the dealership now has my car and is driving it around. Told me if he says it's normal there's nothing more he can do for me. Do you believe that? I want the Zone Service Rep to come look at my car, but the dealer won't call him. I already know his name, and as a matter of fact my cousin used to work with him frequently. The rep thought my cousin was an awesome mechanic. My cousin thinks numerous things could be causing this to happen with my car. If only I could talk to that rep....

Well, everybody still tells me it's normal. I guess I have to bite the "Bullit" and take that for an answer, eventhough I'm not satisfied with it!

You could always purchase a new throttle position sensor and install it yourself.
