Suggestion Please! My 3D Carbon Chin Spoiler is coming off AGAIN!
Hi,
I added a 3D Carbon Chin spoiler to my car about 4 months ago. It looks outstanding in my opinion!. However, within a month the tape started to seperate and it begin to pull away from the lower facia near the lower vents. Well, I recently had stripes painted on the car and at the same time I had the shop completely remove the chin spoiler, repaint it, stripe it and re-attach it with stronger foam tape. It has been about a month and I really like the way the paint job turned out, but the damn chin spoiler is starting to pull away again (see pics)!! Has anyone had this problem. Is it a bad fit as far as the chin spoiler goes? or is the foam tape crap? Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated as this is getting on my last nerve
I don't plan on trying to pull the spoiler off to fix it for another two months (I hope it stays on). The paint is still curing and I don't want to screw it up. By the way, the spoiler is held on with screws in the wheel wells and a couple of push pin type fasteners on the underside of the spoiler...I doubt its going anywhere. It just looks like crap close up...at least if you know what to look for.
On the plus side my X-Charger supercharger arrives on Tuesday!!! I hope the chin spoiler can take the extra speed and acceleration until I get it fixed right.
Thanks!!

Reason: typo
It looks like whoever did the prep work did a shitty job. See with 3m tape you have to prep the surface real well this includes washing the surface to be taped , then cleaning with alcohaul swabs real well, once cleaned with alchaul let dry , then you want to add your automotive adhesian promter this is what cause the tape to stick to the vechicle and part. It loks like the surface wasent cleaned that good so its comeing undone. Also it is recomended to do the install with a warm temperature at least 75 degress for the tape to stick.
Hmm..well the temperature is no problem since I am in sunny Florida. It seems odd that the shop would have F'd this up twice. They specialize in custom paint and body kits. I have the adhesion promotor and tape in my garage. I just decided to let the "pros" do it. I guess I will wait until the paint is cured and try my hand at putting the chin spoiler on right. So the 3-M automotive foam tape is usually pretty much fail proof then if the surface is prepped properly? Any tips or tricks to putting a chin spoiler on (straight)? The only reason I had the shop do it is I thought they would do a better job of getting it lined up properly. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the installation paperwork that came with the spoiler since it was shipped directly to the body shop when it was put on the first time.

Only tip I could recomend is take your time and make sure you are in a dust free area. Also the spoiler looks really great. I just put on my cdc classic chinspoiler on tuesday and so far so good. 3m tape is a real ballbuster in my opinion. I have a xenon window scoop on the one side of my car from a year ago that slightley lifted but nothing big iwill have that redone sometime because the paint flaked of the inside of the window scoop and 1 quarter scoop on i side I ordered it already painted from atlanta auto but they did a shitty job prepping it because the paint flaked of of it but color match was spot on. I would also take it back to them to restick it you paid for a service and it is already comeing undone take it back to them and have them do it over for free.
I already took it back to them and had it redone once before. At this point I'd rather do it myself and see if I have better luck. I already bought the supplies to re-do it (adhesion promotor, wax/adhesive remover, and 3-M Autobody trim tape in various sizes). If it doesn't work this time I can blame myself
I suppose I should probably wait until the paint is fully cured to start messing with it. It was painted about a month ago. Am I right to assume that??

I used small 1/2 long screws on mine. I lifted the car on Jack stands and then took off the bottom "skid pan" to access the facia from the inside. I then marked out where the thick part of the chin Spoiler was "TAPE AREA" and SLOWLY WITH CARE screwed in the screws thru the facia into the chin Spoiler. I over did it by placing several screws on each side of the spoiler. I'll post pics in my forum pictures.
id go with the screws to or rivets but if you use rivets buy extra long ones and put washers on both sides once that is sucked up tight the lip with tear in two pieces before it comes out, im not real fond of tape holding together body peices to begin with
Thanks stlwagon,
I ordered a roll and will try it out to see how it works.
Thanks again!

Use PowerGrip, you can buy it at Lowes or Wal-Mart. My side skirts kept coming off, so a buddy suggested PowerGrip and I haven't had a problem since. That was two years ago.

Now that's not a bad idea! Never thought about that for auto trim.
i also have those problems before. I have a cervinis b2 chin spoiler for V6 and a street scene rear valance. I drilled and screwed everything and now i have no worries of it coming off. its really attached good without any milli space.
when i had my prodesign spoiler on my car I had the same problem w/the tape so I did the rivet thing still came off so I siliconed it to the bumper worked great till i hit a low spot in the road.
As for putting GT rockers on my car I painted mine 2 coats primer 3 coats silver 3 coats clear came out smooth as GT's look at the pic for my name can u tell if they are GT's or not???
