Unhappy Just got the call. CAMSHAFT THRASHED

I just got the call from the dealer on the mustang. The left bank camshaft is toast. Now the mechanic says $1500 to replace but there may be metal in the engine. New $5300...I don't think so. I put 5w-30 Mobil 1 in the car when I got it. Recommended on Mobil-One website. Ran for 2500 miles. Left bank started tapping noise. Then I read here Mobil One bad. So why did they recommend it for my car???? Replace with Ford 5w-20 recommended blend an K&N filters..Always. SO what is this oil doing to the engines if it's so bad??? I'm inclined to dump this vehicle if this is the kind of reliability I can expect. Not sure I want to be messing with SOHC's either. Any ideas? Thoughts? Anyone seen a V6 to V8 swap on New Generations???

There's nothing wrong with Mobil 1 and certainly nothing that would trash your engine. And 5W-20 is NOT recommended for the V6- 5W -30 is the correct weight. There was something wrong with this car and sounds like the dealer is trying to get around fixing it.

I don't see this as an oil-related failure.

Neither did I. I just wasn't ready to mess with this engine. Only 29000 miles. But Aw what the hell let's see what kind of mischief when can get. I'll take it for the cam from now on but I'm going to buy the Factory Books and get intimately involved with the inner workings of this one. I told the dealer I wanted every part that's being replaced. I'll know more in a few days.

Sounds to me like you're getting screwed by your dealership. If the car has under 36000 miles or you've had it less than three years, I'd say it should be a warranty job that your dealership should honor. The dealership where I take my car will honor the Ford warranty providing the problem isn't the result of aftermarket additions that are deemed as the direct cause of the problem (e.g. Nitrus injection that blows out the bottom end of the engine.)

I agree- I have a 2005 that is still under warranty until the end of the month, when the 3 year period from initial sale expires. Something catastrophic like a camshaft failure can't be blamed on oil, period. If the car is still under warranty and the dealer won't fix it, find another dealer.

Call Ford directly and tell them what happened. Tell the dealer that you want to speak to the Regional Service Rep. This is an individual who works for Ford, not the dealership. They will set up an appointment for you to meet and go over your complaint. Take all your service records. If you did any work yourself bring the receipts.

I had a dealership adjust the valves on my Integra and got it back with a really bad valve click. They then told me my brakes were worn in the rear after 12k miles. I called Acura and complained about their brakes and the bad valve click. They came out and discovered the valve adjustment was only half done. They repaired my car and refunded my money on the brakes since the dealership could not provide the old brakes to prove they were worn.

You should ask for a new engine since you have put normal wear and tear on the car and an engine that fails at such a low milage rate must have been defective in the first place.

My guess its a faulty camshaft during manufacture. A long time ago I bought a new 79 Chevy Pickup. After 7,000 miles had problems.. Took it in and they said it was the camshaft. They said some of the camshafts, during production, were not made(tempered) hard enough and thus wore down. Was under warranty so no problems with repair.
