Default What gears would make for a fun daily driver?

Right now its completely stock, and I wanted to put 4.10s and a T-Loc on it, but then someone said that 4.10s would be terrible because on the highway it just wouldnt work too well. What about 3.73s? Or what would you recommend for fast acceleration but also a nice top speed? Thanks in advance!

3.73's are a nice middle ground? Are you planning any huge mods down the road? 4.10s are tough to live with on a heavily modded car. 3.73's are used in the Bullitts and GT500KRs so keep that as food for thought. But also keep in mind, some people who get 3.73's set up and eventually get 4.10s

Not really major, but I wanted to stick an xcharger or a vortech supercharger in there, running around 6-8 psi, I think that should be enough to give me a satisfying increase yet still keep my engine alive. I might do an engine build later down the road...maybe much later. Im leaning more towards the 3.73s then, how much of a difference is it than stock? And can I install it myself?

FYI: Supercharger = Major mod

3.73 is perfect for daily use. 4.10 is a little too much, especially if you drive 55 MPH and over. I noticed a difference between the stock 3.55 and the 3.73. I hear they are tough to install, but it depends how good of a mechanic you are.

Why, what happens over 55mph? Thats the same thing I heard but I dont quite understand what you guys mean. And oh, LOL I didnt think of it as a major mod haha, I guess so...Would the 3.73s still be ok though? Or is there anything better?

If your going to put a new rear end on you could always get 3.90's. They're a very nice mid-piont between 3.73s and 4.10s.

I just dropped my car off to get 3.73's installed. Picking it up tomorrow afternoon.

I talked with the installer and got some info. 3.73's are good for a car that you drive for fun. 4.10's are better for racing. The thing is that with 4.10's your RPM's at 70 are going to be 2800 or more, which is the point where the 4.0 really starts to get loud. If you've got exhaust of any kind you're going to experience massive amounts of drone if you drive over 60mph with 4.10's. On top of which your gas mileage, which seems to be all anyone can talk about these days, is going to suffer a good bit (3-4mpg street and highway). If you drive a lot (50 or more miles round trip per day) then you'll probably be happier with the 3.73's.

Another thing is gear brand. Ford charges an arm and a leg for a brand new Ford gear set and FRPP doesn't make them for the 7.5" anymore. Aftermarket gears are OK but Ford gears are better than most aftermarket. When you go to have your gears installed, ask about having a used set of OEM Ford gears installed. They're better than aftermarket, cheaper and they don't have any break-in period since they were broken in on the first car they were in.

I'm having used gears, which I was allowed to inspect beforehand, installed in my car tomorrow and I will be able drop the hammer and leave both tires smoking coming out of the driveway of the shop.

Based on experience over 2 years of daily driving 4.10's are great for an auto transmission and everyday driving. The OD will keep the rpm's at acceptable levels at highway speeds. If you have a manual transmission go with the 3.73 gears.

I don't think anyone makes a 3.90 for the 7.5" rear.
