Default how to check Transmission oil on S197 Mustangs?

Hallo

Does anyone know how i can check if there is enough oil in my automatic transmission?

Problem is that we need here a seperate radiator for transmission oil because on our Autobahn the oiltemerature goes so far that the transmission can break.
So i installed the radiator but there leaked some oil and now i want to fill it in but dont know how to check if there is enozgh in it.

Heared something like : Fill in as much as possible, open the drain plug ( its under the transmission ) and wait. When it stops to leak from the drain there is enough oil in it

Is this correct?

Thanks for your help...

Daniel

What you heard is correct.... You have to make sure the vehicle is level. The drain plug is a two piece plug with a center plug. You need a special tool piece that will screw into where the center plug is after you remove it. You can then attach a hose to the tool and use a hand pump to pump in the transmission fluid. According to Ford.. then you have to have it at a certain temperature.. yada yada yada.. How critical that is, I do not know. However.. you then remove the hose and let the fluid run out.. when it is done.. you are at the correct level and you can put the center plug back in.

The only time you would remove the outer drain plug is when you want to drain the entire pan so you could install a new transmission filter. Do not remove the outer plug or you will get a lot of fluid and then have to pump it all back in with fresh transmission fluid.

It is sort of like what the Mercedes uses on their cars.. which is why Ford decided to save money and remove the dip stick and dip stick tube making life more complicated for the owner of the vehicle, and hopefully the owner will just come in and pay the dealer to service the transmission for them.

Hope this answers your question...

Daniel...

Think of it this way and it is easier... The small plug actually is screwed into a tube that is welded to the outer drain plug. It extends a set calibrated distance up inside the transmission pan. When the fluid drains to the top of the tube, it will stop dripping out and is at the correct level. If instead you were to remove the outer plug, then you would actually be able to see the calibrated tube welded to it and extending up into the pan.

I hope this clears the mystery of the two plugs for you. Basically, the outer plug is threaded into the pan, and the inner plug is threaded into the outer plug. Hold back on the outer plug when you go to remove the inner plug, or you may actually start to unscrew the outer plug also.

Good luck ... Happy Mustanging... I am sure some others might be able to make it plainer or might know of a site that shows the plug assembly itself.

I need to get my center plug out so I can add some fluid but i think it might be stripped, if I had a torx that was just one step bigger I could get it out but I don't. Does anyone know how much a shop would charge to change the tranny fluid?

My Ford dealer wants $140 to flush the tranny.

Midas will do it for $120...

Wie gehts?

I'm curious, what did you buy in the way of a radiator and how/where did you attach it? What radiators did you look at in your search and why did you pick the one you bought?

Vielen dank!

According to the head transmission tech at my Ford dealer, if you let the oil completely finish draining from the center fitting, the tranny will be underfilled. It needs to be a slow stream. I think it's supposed to be about a pint difference.

He's an oldtimer guy that knows all the old trannys as well as the new ones. He like their guru, and knows his stuff.
