Default Noisy T5? Read this!

To all of you who are experiencing a noisy T5 manual trans in their v6, TSB 08-8-5 has been released in April 08 to correct the problem. Depending on build date some may just get a revised flywheel others will get a clutch and a flywheel. I took mine to the dealer today and at 26k miles i will be getting a clutch and a flywheel. And because the tsb applies to noise the clutch is covered as well. Im happier than a pig in sh*t, I suggest all of you get your cars in asap and ask for the tsb by number. Good luck!

I also had this TSB completed a week ago and posted on this. It is well worth being done. I could not be happier with the outcome, almost all noise and vibration is gone! Also a couple of days ago I switched the transmission fluid to Royal Purple and am also pleased with those results.

Can someone post the actual Ford TSB link, can't seem to find it. Did find this in another group tho.

TSB
08-8-5
  • 4.0L WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION - 4TH GEAR RATTLE/KNOCK NOISE ON ACCELERATION - 1800-2200 RPM APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH (72 KM/H)
Publication Date: April 4, 2008
FORD:2005-2007 Mustang
ISSUE:

Some 2005-2007 Mustang vehicles, equipped with a 4.0L engine and manual transmission, may exhibit a rattle or knocking noise on light acceleration between 1800-2200 RPM around 45 MPH (72 Km/h). It is most evident in 4th gear after the engine/transmission has reached operating temperatures. It has been described as a helicopter noise, similar to when you put a playing card in bicycle spokes. This noise has no affect on vehicle performance or durability.
ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
NOTE:THIS NOISE IS DUE TO A SYSTEM RESONANCE, COMMON TO SOME 4.0L/MANUAL TRANSMISSION EQUIPPED VEHICLES, AND HAS NO AFFECT ON CLUTCH/TRANSMISSION LIFE/DURABILITY. PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE WILL GREATLY REDUCE THE NOISE LEVEL.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1.
Follow TSB 08-3-4 to eliminate any noise/vibration related to exhaust system alignment. If rattle noise still persists, then proceed to Step 2. NOTE:THIS PROCEDURE WILL NOT FIX THE CONCERN IF THE CUSTOMER COMPLAINT IS:
    •
ABOVE 55 MPH
ON COAST DOWN
IN 1ST OR 5TH GEAR
AFFECTED BY PRESSURE ON THE SHIFTER
    • A GRINDING NOISE

The noise specific to this procedure is most evident after the engine/transmission has reached operating temperatures. It is due to a resonance. The transfer path for the noise is through the gear shift lever area and transmission mount. If the noise can be replicated in 4th gear on light acceleration between 1800-2200 RPM, around 45 MPH (72 Km/h), then replace the flywheel with the revised flywheel listed in the Parts List. To be compatible, the clutch may need to be replaced depending on build date. See Steps 3 and 4. NOTE:THIS PROCEDURE HAS NO AFFECT ON CLUTCH/TRANSMISSION LIFE/DURABILITY.

If the vehicle was built on or after 12/4/2006, then replace the flywheel per Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01A. If not, then go to Step 4.
  2. If the vehicle was built before 12/4/2006, then replace the flywheel, clutch disc, and clutch pressure plate per WSM, Sections 303-01A and 308-01.

My tranny makes that noise although its more around 38-40 mph now that i've got 3.73's installed. It was definitely built before December '06 (I bought it in Feb. 05.)

Now thats all well and good but my warranty has been gone for 34,000 miles. Can I still get a new clutch, clutch disc and flywheel out of it?

Read somewhere where royal purple is not good for the seals in a t-5?

Chopperman,
This is the same problem I had, could not find a copy of the TSB. I brought in a copy of one like you have and the service manager pulled up the one from Ford one his computer.

Turanza2,
I just brought in this copy and had the manager look it up. Ford knows that this is an issue with some cars or they would not have developed a fix with parts list and corrective actions.

I posted a thread (Transmission noise and vibration, mainly in 4th gear).

The new flywheel is a two piece unit and appears to be lighter, although I was not able to weight them.
This was also covered under warranty as I only had 17,000 miles on my car.

Hope this helps, I would recommend a lot of research and take copies of the TSBs and complaints in with you.
Knowledge is power.

Stopped by my local stealership yesterday. It's going in next Friday for flywheel, clutch assembly and pressure plate, they didn't even need to do the "diagnostics" on it because I already had the vibration complaints in my record. Mines out of the base warranty due to time, but I have the Ford ESP 5yr/100k so that covered it. They said the clutch assembly wasn't covered at first but after a bit of "talking" they covered it. I yanked the driveshaft, the loop and shifter yesterday, but I'm sure not swapping the rearend back, so there better be no bitchin about that! I figured for an hrs work it was worth it....

Great news, I think you will be pleased. A couple of things I noticed was, clutch pedal has a much lighter feel and it seems to rev quicker.
The lighter pedal takes a few tries to get used to it, but now it seems how it should have been all along.

My question still stands: Without a warranty will I still be able to get my clutch, flywheel and clutch disc replaced on the TSB?

The pilot bearing is made into the new flywheel.

As far as the warranty my dealership said unless I had a complaint prior to the warranty period ending it would have not been covered.

That being said I would still try. It never hurts to ask!

A TSB is not a recall and the MFR has no obligation to do anything. You might be able to fight and possibly get Ford involved if you have documented proof that you brought it in for service for this exact problem and were told there's nothing wrong prior to this TSB coming out in April.

It seems silly to me for Ford to come out with a TSB after 3 years, being that their basic warranty is 3/36k. Then again, I guess its their way of doing good by the customers who bought extended plans.

I never brought mine in for the noise because its never really bothered me that much. My warranty has been gone for some time now, being that I bought in Feb. 05 and i've got 70k miles now.

Kind of just wanted to see if I could get a free clutch out of it. With 70k on her I don't expect the clutch has too much more left after the abuse I put it through.
